Johanne's Journal, 30 September 2015

It's not all in my head! I may have an ulcer. That's why the "hunger" pains start within 20 minutes of eating and lessen as time passes between meals. Upper scope being scheduled. And, as for the recent, worsening depression, aches and tiredness, my vitamin D is seriously low. I'm not sure how this is possible. I take 2,000 IU of D3 every day. They are putting me on 50,000 IU for the next 12 weeks. Who knew?!!! So, how could my D possibly be that low? I haven't seen the rest of my results yet, but since the nurse didn't feel any other issues were worth an emergency call and no other meds were changed, I'll assume everything else is in order. I'm also being scheduled for food allergy testing and the surgery on my right hand. I'm off to get lunch. Ta!

Jeez Louise... I can't believe you have a new set of problems! The vitamin D thing is scary. I don't understand how that could be happening, but it's possible that you are not absorbing the Vit D from supplements and need to get it through food and sunshine. Maybe at the same time you take the extra they're prescribing, you should try to drink some lactose-free milk and sit in the sun for 15-20 minutes per day without sun screen. I am going for bloodwork on Saturday... preparing for check up on 10-14. Good luck with the ulcer...

I had the same D3 issues last year and was given the 50,000 IU regimen, too. I take 2000 IU daily now, too. Sorry to hear about the possible ulcer - but treatment would solve some issues and answer those questions you have wondered about for a while.

HM, there are so few foods that have actual D . . . egg yolks (I eat one whole egg every day, fatty fish (you have to watch the mercury) and some mushrooms (but most of the commercial ones are irradiated which kills most of the D). Milk and other foods are fortified which is the same as taking a supplement. I would put on shorts and a tank top and sit out, but it's already getting pretty chilly here. Older people's skin doesn't process D from the sun very well. I'm just wondering why I'm not processing the supplements I've been taking. A talk with my pharmacist is in order! I'm taking Spring Valley, which is supposed to be pretty good. Thanks for the concern. It's nice to have people in my corner!

HCB, it's easier to deal with now that I know I'm not going mental. It's a little scary when you think it's all in your head!
