BuffyBear's Journal, 05 August 2011

Happy Friday! For the first time in over a month we've got dreary skies and cooler weather! I am hoping the rain holds off - I so much would love to walk the little nature trail today at lunch time.

Prepared hot peppers out of my garden this morning - big mistake! No matter how many times I washed my hands my eyes burn when I rub them. And I feel I need to rub my eyes because they are still irritated because of the peppers. Needless to say I'm not wearing eye makeup today!

Heard hot peppers burn calories. Lets hope it is true.

Oh no, about the hot peppers! I had a friend do the same thing. He took a bowl of milk and put his face in it. Don't actually know if that worked or not. Let's just say he couldn't wear his contacts for 2 weeks after.

Brula - maybe I'll buy some milk at lunch and try washing my hands in that - thanks. Fortunately, I don't wear contracts.

I'm jealous. This is the second year that I haven't had a garden and I miss it so much. I don't have any pepper advise. I would be doing the same thing all day long. lol

Oh no, Buffy! Peppers are dangerous - surprised Congress hasn't come up with a law requiring some onerous fees on seed companies to pay for medical treatment of those who eventually grow them. But...hope your hands and eyes recover quickly. Sorry, but I don't have any remedies to pass along....hang in there.

Hey, Buffy, we did abput 10 pints of pepper rings out of the garden last week. We made sugar free bread and butter hot pepper rings...they are scrumptious, but yep, like you said, everytime I touched my eyes, nose, mouth, OH MY!!! The burn!!! Hope it passes for you soon...I have gotten some relief by rinsing my hands with milk...cuts the oils.

Hey Buffy Love those hot peppers, I put gloves on when cutting them they are so irritating. They are delicious, especially home grown. Here is a link for a few different ways to deal with it. http://www.ehow.com/how_4510573_wash-hot-peppers-off-hands.html Enjoy your day!!!

Liltagirl - Even though I hardly grow anything, I would really miss my garden. The heat has killed everything but my peppers and tomatoes. Last year I was picking peppers through the end of October.

Sandy - Yeah - you'd think they'd at least have a warning label. I love reading warning labels - they are too funny. Like the one on the push lawn mower that says it is not to be used as a hedge trimmer. Go figure!

Stef - Now that is lot of peppers! You wouldn't happen to have a recipe for banana pepper rings - like the ones they put on subs?

Yvonne - Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. And thanks also for the reminder to wear gloves. I won't forget next time.

Bren - I promise to not eat too many tonight. They are in the crockpot with a turkey roast. This is an experiment trying to use up what I have with what is on sale. We'll see.

Oh, that sounds like a hot way to start the weekend! Not funny, I know, but I couldn't help myself. I don't have any solutions for you either, now, come to think of it, I had NO idea that could happen to a person...really, that just sounds terrible! I sure hope the situation improves quickly for you!

I love hot peppers too, the exam gloves are the key to saving your eyes (I learned this handling Scotch Bonnet peppers), it can be very painful for sure. Dairy products like milk are said to neutralize the capsaicin (the ingredient that makes the pepper hot), but I don't know if I'd plunge my face into it LOL. Enjoy those peppers!

I would think it's not just your eyes you need to be careful not to touch lol

Try washing your hands with bleach diluted with water (about a half and half mix) then washing the bleach of with soap and water. Alton Brown suggested this on one of his shows and it works for me. I use dried ground up Ghost chili's in place of black pepper...so it should work for u 2 :)
