Barbara OConnor's Journal, 01 August 2015

Well today is the official first day of my new life style eating a ketogenic diet. Started my day off with a bullet cup of coffee with stevia for sweetness, tried drinking without first but nope needed the stevia. Had eight glasses of water by lunch got a lot done. Long around 2pm felt really bad figured since I had only slept about 4 hours, I would take a nap. Woke up at 4:30 and was really hungry. Wanted to go to the grocery store but my honey wanted to wait till later. So he went to Jack in the box. Where I had a ultimate Cheeseburger with no bun no ketchup. Side salad with ranch dressing. I at least am no longer hungry. Up to 12 glasses (8 oz) each so far today with 8 more to go. The water is the easy part for me. I think I may have the ketogenic flu since I have been eating high fat for 3 days now. I just keep telling myself this too will pass. I have embraced this style of eating for all the health benefits more than the weight loss. The weight loss will be wonderful please don't misconstrue that statement. Easing the join pain, the breathing issues have a bigger priority for me. Hell I have been over weight for years it was the joint pain that drove me to the promises this style of eating holds.

One thing that has helped others to Keto adapt and get past the flu stage is to add salt to your food. I've compared notes with a lot of other Ketoers and was finally backed up by some doctor's opinions is that you need extra salt (I don't measure my salt or even consider the sodium in my food, add for taste). I typically will add salt and pepper at each meal, especially breakfast (Eggs & some meat ie. bacon, pork, etc...). Other Ketoers have wondered why I wouldn't get leg cramps and why they would, and I think the big difference is that I add salt to my food. I don't know if it's because of our initial massive water uptake that is throwing the sodium balance out of wack or something else, but salt appears to be very helpful in adapting to Keto/Low Carbing.

I love my keto way of eating. I am seldom hungry, and have lost all my cravings for starches, grains, dairy, etc. I do eat small amounts of fruits from time to time. Nice job eating the burger without the bun or ketchup.

It works for some. So terrific for you if it does and you can make it sustainable.

Thanks for all the little things that make keto better, Frosty you are so correct as I am in such a habit of not adding salt, guess what, haven't added any salt to any meal yet. I will correct that starting tomorrow. And yes, I have not had any dairy, starches, or bread products in my diet for 3 days. I will not consider it eliminated from my diet until 21 days have past as it takes 21 days to change any habits including eating. My health is in such bad shape that I feel failure is not a option. Which is what drives me and actually I think it is a hellva a motivator myself. I want to take this time to say thank you for all your support. You guys are simply the greatest.

Barbara, glad you are feeling better. Don't overdo the salt but your body does need some. Hope that your hip is OK.

Tamarah Jo is right. Once you get through those first couple of weeks you will feel amazing. You'll wake up ready to face the day and feel more energized and focused! Frosty is right about the salt-- some folks even take magnesium supplements while on keto. I'm surprised that you cut dairy as cheese is my tasty best friend now that I am eating keto. After 2 1/2 months of this lifestyle, I have read and learned so much about how the body uses food to power it. I can't imagine I'll ever slip out altogether now that I know how much better I feel without all of those sluggish carbs gummin' up my system. Best of luck!
