CatHerder's Journal, 29 July 2015

I think my weight is finally trending in the right direction. I have been working on trying to eat less than 2000 calories per day. It's been a tough road as my body is fighting it every step of the way.

I've been reading on weight loss and the myths that have become common. The myth that you need to cut 3500 calories to lose a pound of weight. Current researchers are saying it can be as high as 7000 calories to lose a pound depending on your biology. Kind of depressing. Also the myth that it take several days before your body goes into "starvation mode". They actually say your metabolism starts to decrease after just a single day of caloric deficit. So much for the short term starvation diets.

I hope everyone has a great Wednesday.

Great job on your loss! As for metabolism and weight loss there is conflicting research out there, it's hard to know what to believe. I still feel that while there are a lot of commonalities among us as to how our bodies burn calories, there are some differences from person to person. For myself even if I log my intake and exercise meticulously I don't get the weight loss I'd expect to, looking at my caloric deficit and translating that to pounds actually lost. It is what it is though so we have to figure out what it is that works for us and go by that - if I stick to what I know works for me in the long run I will lose weight. Just not as quickly as I would like, so I simply try to enjoy the journey getting there with all its ups and downs. Have a great day!!

I hear that, Herder. Under 2 k for a male is tough, even if you're a fairly small frame.

If I were to lose a pound for every 3500 calorie deficit I would lose a pound every three days, but that's not happening! Or I am not burning near the regular amount of calories for my normal routines. Something is whacked! But its slowly going down so I can't complain.

You're doing so well! I think the 7000 cals to the pound notion probably does check out and accounts for why weight loss is so slow. Also as we lose weight and there is less of us to maintain, our food needs go down, and RDI needs to be reduced. Also some of us probably have slightly slower metabolisms than the average used for RDI calculations. I find I lose better if I stick to around 90% of RDI.
