Hermiones Mom's Journal, 23 June 2015

I am living proof: It is possible to travel through France and Switzerland for 18 days without ever eating bread or pastry, wine or cheese, mushrooms or truffles. I have waited 25 years to realize my dream of seeing Monet's garden at Giverny, and when I went, I had to stick to this wacky FODMAP diet with no wheat, no dairy, and no fruits or veggies high in fructose. On the other hand, after sticking to the diet for about 2 mos., my digestive distress is pretty much gone, and I've actually lost a significant amount of weight. Apparently when you eliminate fructose, you automatically lose weight, especially since eliminating all these things means no ice creams, cookies, or cakes, no bread, no cheese, etc. I may be the first person in history to go on a river cruise and have trouble getting enough to eat! Now, I'm ready to actually start monitoring calories and carbs again and get serious.

I also eat no dairy or grains - doing low carb high fat ketogenic approach. How was Monet's Garden? Sounds ideal!

First, Monet's garden was heavenly -- really, even on a cloudy day. Just wish I'd had more time there, and I hope to go back one day. Looking at your profile, we seem to have some things in common. I eat both lactose-free dairy and non-wheat grains though. But while traveling, there wasn't access to lactose free dairy in France. In fact, the first thing I did when I got home was make myself a cheese omelet with lactose-free cheese-- it tasted heavenly. The diet I'm on is called FODMAP -- which seeks to limits fructose and lactose, which means no wheat, no regular dairy, and then there's a whole bunch of fruits and veggies that you can't eat, including Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, watermelon, and no honey, high-fructose corn syrup, or sorbitol, which occurs naturally in peaches, plums, apples. It's a bit overwhelming at first, but not too bad once you get used to it.

How was your visit to the garden? It's one of my favorite paintings and would love to see it one day!

Suzi161 -- I didn't want to either, but diarrhea while traveling is horrible and if I eat any of the "no-no's" on FODMAP that's what happens to me. Anyone who would like to see some photos of Monet's garden at Giverny, send me a message, and when I finish transferring them into my computer, I will send you some. It's pretty spectacular. Also saw the Matisse and Chagall museums in Nice and Matisse's chapel for the Dominican sisters in the countryside outside of Nice, and all were fantastic.

What a fabulous trip! So happy you focused on the things you gained from the visit rather than what you could not eat!

HCB -- it was truly fabulous, and the eating part wasn't as hard as I imagined it would be. I think I was very lucky that the Viking Cruise people were so great about trying to make sure I had something to eat.
