Johanne's Journal, 26 July 2011

My house is infested with brown recluse spiders. I'm glad they're not aggressive or I would be in real trouble. My ninth grade biology teacher in Maryland, Mr. Brett, warned us about them when I was 14. In all the years after that, I was so paranoid. Little did I know, brown recluse don't live in Maryland. We did have black widows. Well, Missouri is one of the recluse's stomping grounds and my house seems to be one of their favorite play houses. My neighbor in the mother-in-law apt. on the end of my house got bitten on Friday. Fortunately, it seems it was just a bite and the spider didn't inject venom. It's bruised, hot, red and puffy, but not necrotic. As messy as my house is, I ALWAYS make and smooth my bed, and I always check the bed, check my shoes (Mr. Brett's rallying cry) and shake out clothes before I put them on. I just finished tearing the love seat I normally sit on apart to make sure it was spider free. On top of all that, I'm an anachrophobe . . . have been since the age of 8. Supposedly, the only way to rid yourself of spiders is to set sticky traps all along the base boards and corners. In the fall I bring in Osage oranges. They really seem to help for at least a few months. Yuccccch! I hate spiders (but they are extremely useful and fascinate me too.)

The good thing is you are prepared to do battle with the little buggars, just keep makeing sure everything you sit/lay/wear is spider free and I am sure you will be ok. I love spiders and the more dangerous the more the more fascinated I am with them... my brother however is super scared of them so I am not allowed to bring them into the house lol.

Pixi, I would gladly send them all to you. You would love the little darlings. I just killed two in my kitchen sink a few minutes ago. Unlike most spiders, they have six eyes instead of eight . . . very distinctive. Of course, to see this phenomenon, you have to get up close and personal. LOL! They're nocturnal, and, unless you come across them accidentally and actually brush up against them, they seldom bite. If they see you first, they run the other direction as fast as you do. Since I am doing major house cleaning though, I'm running into them several times daily and it's sheer blind luck that I haven't been bitten yet. I'm stirring up their hiding places.

In my area, we have the Wolf Spider which is the worst spider for an anachrophobe. These massive spiders carry their babies on their back, and if they're just the slightest bit frightened, the babies jump off their mother so you see HUNDREDS of tiny black dots scatter in every direction. It's absolutely terrifying. I hope you'll be able to get your problem taken care of soon!!

Bren, I'm with you. Fortunately, since I'm on the lookout for them constantly, as I clean, I'm catching them before the catch me so far. I didn't think about hair spray. I'll have to get some. I used to use Krylon fixative on wolf spiders, being an artist and having it around. I can't afford it any more since I am no longer working. I'm having a great Wednesday . . . only two recluse so far today. LOL! Hugs Bren!

Mojo, we have wolf spiders here, as well. I haven't seen any lately and I think that is because the recluse are killing off all competition. My son took a picture of one on the side of his house here in MO that was bigger than the width of the brick it was sitting on. In Northern Virginia, back in 1969, we moved from Washington, D.C. into a one room cabin in the middle of 450 acres of woods in Oakton, VA (those woods no longer exist. It's all paved over now.) My kids were 6 and 5 years old. It was a bit of a shock to their city bred sensitivities. The first day, my son came running in, frantic, yelling, "Mommy, mommy, I stepped on a spider and it exploded! It's running everywhere!!!" He was horror struck. I ran to the door to see what he was talking about. He had stepped on a wolf spider and all it's babies had jumped off and were running everywhere. He thought it had MULTIPLIED. Can you just imagine what a nightmare scenario that would be to a 6 year old? I had such a hard time holding in the laughter and comforting and explaining it to him.

I am not bothered by spiders at all, but my hubby is terrified, so I think that is why they don't bother me. But and this is a bit but, I don't think I could deal with the exploding, multiplying variety. They would get me for sure and freak me out as well......just the thought of all those babies yuck, yuck.....shiver, shiver

LOL! They are a bit freaky. I can't step on a wolf spider whether it's carrying babies or not. When they are that big, they are animals and I just can't do it. I finally got bitten by a recluse last night. I picked up a folded dish towel to dry my hands and she was folded up in it. I took her with me to the emergency room so I could show them I wasn't being paranoid. They gave me an antibiotic and topical cream. It was treated within and hour, and so far, the reaction isn't too bad. My hand aches up to my elbow and is a little stiff, but the bite doesn't look like it will go necrotic at this point.

Oh I hope you are feeling better, yep I know I could not deal with those, I don't think I could live anywhere with those crazy spiders.......I know my Hubby would totally freak out. He was going crazy when we cleaned out our garage, and that was just the regular spiders....LOL
