So, I see a lot of people on here say "I've been dieting and exercising for a week and I've GAINED weight?! Why even bother?!"

I've tried to chime in and support people and explain that this can be quite normal and that you really have to look at this as a long term commitment and frankly see it as a lifestyle change more than anything.

Well, as of today I can say I am putting my money where my mouth is. I had lapsed pretty badly over the last year and my activity level was pathetic. So now that I am suddenly eating right again and working out daily I have actually seen a slight gain (not logging it since I am only logging on Saturday AM). As of today though I have actually seen an increase of a pound.

Inches have gone down and no it's not muscle that's making me heavy (that whole "oh don't be discouraged, muscle weighs more than fat!" thing). I know what I should weigh with a decent amount of muscle. Muscle doesn't pack on that quickly either.

So, in an effort to understand exactly what IS happening as I know this is normal I did a little research and found an article that I think a lot of people on here would benefit from reading. I no longer weigh myself daily because that makes it seem like once I reach a weight I'm "done" when there is no DONE in being healthy. It's just a permanent way of living. Also, it makes natural fluctuations in my body feel like failures.

I hope that at least a couple of people on here read this and find it helpful in not getting discouraged. Getting started is the hard part and I don't mean the first couple of days. I mean the first days, weeks, even months you will feel like maybe it's not worth it. But you fail 100% of the time if you don't try and even if you don't look like you want, how is being healthier EVER a bad decision?!

Stay motivated FS friends. You CAN do this and more importantly you are WORTH this. You should value and respect yourself enough to stick with it because you deserve health.

Thank you! I am one of these people, asking myself the same things... But I'm not giving up. I don't consider this a diet, but a lifestyle now. :)

Thank you for sharing. I also look at this as a lifestyle change especially since i turn 40 this month. I am only going to weigh myself every two weeks to avoid that fluctuation. I also know that water in the body can cause you weigh more..... so I am avoiding salt like it is the plague. lol. Best of luck to all of us!

daily weighing can be soul destroying i never do it anymore, ever noticed how mentally you are more inclined to jump on the scales after a bad day and see what damage its done !

I am so glad people have found this helpful and inspiring! And YES Ade1973 it never fails that when I am having a "down" day I am tempted to get on the scale... almost like a punishment for myself or something. I resist the urge now because of the negative impact it has on me. :)
