Hour 20 of a 40 hour fast. Feeling a little light headed. I just needed to do this to reassure myself of my determination.

I think they are dangerous and not good for your health. I am sure lots of people believe otherwise.

You are a lot more determined than me. I sometimes have a hard time making it 16 hours.

I am one. In fact, I believe our bodies were designed for it. Almost all religions encourage it. I did a long one once. Can't remember how long. I think it was 10 days. Talk about detox.

Correction.... I said he was going to pass out in a snow bank and they'd have to dig him out. I see the brain isn't working due to lack of food.

NM, admire you for your dedication. No way could I do a 40 hour real fast. I would be in trouble with a major migraine. Best of luck to you. CR, yup that would be me passed out in a snow bank, lets hope it's not NM.

Yes - if you read "Grain Brain" by neurologist Dr. Perlmutter, her writes about fasting in the second half of his book - he says our ancestors went long periods of time in between meals since they were hunter-gatherers. He writes it is good for brain health. I can do 16-20 hours, but not very often. 40 hours would probably give me a headache - you do fluids like teas and water, right?

NorthernM, you can do it!!! I'm back into IF. I have been away for ten months. I lost thirty four lbs doing IF, I"m going to do 19:5, and 1 (36 hr) fast. Keep busy! That helps on a fast!

Question?? the life expectancy of our ancestors was short. Does that fit with your life expectancy expectations? A question asked a long time ago on this site. I tell my kids they will have to deal with me until I'm at least 104... Do you really want to live to 35 or what ever time period you are comparing things to?

Sorry I do not get it....

WFN - LOL, I think it is more about metabolism and clarity of the mind. Many religions use fasting for spiritual growth. I suppose our ancestors had short lives because they lacked prot4ection from the elements and their natural predators.

I think it had more to do with the quality of the food our ancestors had, or maybe that's variety. For example. Where I live, in the summer I'd be eating huckleberries, Oregon grape and fish. In the fall, it would be dried berries and likely bear meat. In the winter it would be dried berries (if any were left) moose, mice, and pine needle tea. Now... WAIT A MINUTE!!!

Don't forget medical care. I believe the majority of woman died in childbirth. That can't be attributed to diet, but rather... to something else.

Yup - are you light headed??? getting any beautiful mystical messages? I would be sleeping the time away...

I have only made it 20 hours. I probably could have made it longer if my daughter was to stay with her grandparents. Feeding her snacks and meals finally got to me a dinner time. Good luck. My husband can go three days!!

Swearing at this computer-- 4th or 5th time I've tried to post this. We live in a different world than our hunter/gatherer ancestors. We no longer trek long miles to obtain our foods, driving to the local grocery store or maybe 3 is all we do. The rules they lived by no longer apply. We sit at computers all day not out hunting our food to survive. You live by modern standards, it makes no sense to structure a diet plan around an ancient civilization that no longer exists. You do not trek 5 miles to find 100 calories worth of food. Taylor your plan to modern life. Even my grand parents went from horse and buggy to men landing on the moon!! They were intrigued by the change in the world by the 70"s and I can verify that it has changed dramatically since then. Ancient traditions may not apply to our way of life. Granted I eat mostly non processed foods, I have access to foods from all over the world, it makes my WOE more interesting than it as in the 70"s. so fun and interesting.

I am trying so hard to stay out of this thread lol. Even from my parents generation to ours, dietary needs, medical treatment, and activity levels have changed dramatically in this country. I think that fasting is a psychological way to assert control over our bodies and deny that we have no control over basic bodily functions. OK run with that.

It's not a tayloring. It's simply a different tactic. I eat well when I eat, but is it any wonder that one of the things that never is discussed is fasting to reduce calories? We have two incredibly well industries. One is the food industry. The other is the health/wellness/fitness industry. As with any industry, the desire is the same - repeat customers. The food industry knows we have to eat, and boy, do we. The health/wellness/fitness industry also wants to sell us things, drugs, supplements, vitamins... it's still all about repeat customers. None of them seem to ever advise fasting. Why would they. It's like promoting peace when you own a munitions factory. I saw an article recently about metabolic syndrome now being tied to emulsifiers. One of the main sources for those? Vitamins. Thanks. I'll go a day without foot. It won't hurt me since the rest of the time my diet is good. How's that for light headed. :)
