Kelly Stephens's Journal, 24 February 2015

I have learned that my best friend while on a diet is my Kitchen food scale. I am now starting to know what some portions look like so one the weight is off I won't have to weigh everything because I will know what proper portions look like. Eating proper portions will allow me to keep the weight off and to get finish the Diet marathon that I have spent the majority of my adult life running

Agreed. As someone who is losing weight primarily by managing Type II diabetes the kitchen scale is crucial. I even have friends who have bought one to have on hand for me at their house when we eat over there. Now that I am down to my goal weight I still use mine all the time because I figure maintaining this carefully controlled intake will be easier than trying to lose weight that creeps back on. Stay after it!

Weigh and measure. When you know how many calories you need a day and you know how many calories an amount of food contains it can make you think differently about food and hunger.

Agreed Kelly. I agree with Jparlett, weigh and measure. I measure everything. It definitely makes you think differently.

Ditto. Even when I've gone overboard on portion, I was well aware because I knew what a portion was supposed to look like. It takes a big piece of mystery away from eating. You know where your extra ounces and pounds come from because you've been seeing yourself eat them!

My bariatrics dietician says portion control is the biggest problem in obesity and weight loss. She gave me a visual showing how little a "serving" really is. (You can probably find one online) I'm shocked at how far off I have been in how much I've been eating -- for years! I'm going to weigh & measure my intake until it becomes second nature. I even bought some smaller bowls and plates to help. This is a major learning process. I ditto Draglist's comment... eyeballing your portions can be deceptive.
