ShyGuy's Journal, 29 January 2015

I'm making the transition back to a low carb lifestyle by using up the last few high carb food items in the house, and making it a point to not buy any more. So, here come the salads, baked/ pan roasted chicken, and other meats. I make it a point also to not only buy the marked down meats, but also nothing over $2.00 a pound, to cut costs. I also like roasted veggies. Heading into the weekend; have a great one everybody, and enjoy the big game.

If I kept my meat purchases under $2 a pound, I'd be a vegetarian. Even the cheap ground beef is over $3 a pound! :) Good luck transitioning to low carb!

I always check the discounted meat/seafood section, stuff that's marked down because it's at or near the sell-by date. Gotta be careful, it there's any hint it's not the best quality don't buy it, but you can get some good deals. Where are you getting meat at less than $2/lb though? The only thing I can find like that, other than maybe some processed stuff, is chicken. I need to shop at your store! :) Good job with your eating plan, keep it up!

I can find pork and chicken on sale for less than $2 a pound, but beef and fish would be out of the question. I wish you well as you make your lifestyle changes!

ShyGuy - have you actually been to the store lately?

Thanks for the comments everyone. I use to work at a grocery store, during high school and college, and have regular conversations with one of the butchers at my favorite store, so I know good meat when I see it. You folks are right; beef and fish at under $2.00/lb, is not going to happen. However, today, I bought a package of Pinwheel Chicken (a mixture of legs and thighs) for $1.19/lb, a whole fryer for $.99/lb, and a package of pork steaks for $1.79/lb. Tomorrow I'll be going back to get a Pork Butt Roast for $1.59/lb. I don't always succeed at finding the meat I want, at less than $2.00/lb, especially when I like to eat bacon, sausage, and whenever possible a beef chuck eye steak, with my eggs, but if 75% of whatever I'm eating falls into my desired price range; then I count that as a win. Needless to say, I eat a lot of chicken and pork, and I always buy the family pack, which has a tendency to lower the price. My Mom was a great shopper, and my Grandma bought her meats from the meat markets in Montreal, Canada; so I learned from the best. As a kid, the chickens we were having for dinner, were alive, and clucking, the morning they were destined to be on our dinner table. I don't even know if those places still exist, but it was great way to learn about getting the freshest ingredients possible, when you are cooking from scratch.

Hey buddy..you can do this..I know you can....I have been broiling up a storm in my oven...did some cod loins last night...Yummy...Take care of you...:O)

Thanks Bren. I've never heard of cod loins, but they do sound tasty, when cooked to perfection; and broiling sounds like a quick, and easy, way to cook fish.

ShyGuy - always nice to have the inside track - LOL. BTW - I fully understand. I've lived through some very lean times in my life. Good luck getting the last of the nasty junk food gone.

Nothing wrong with chicken and pork. I love it and salads, I lived on those up till 6 months ago when my daughter and 2 grandkids moved in. They are supposed to be moving out in June and then I can go back to that lifestyle. I did a lot better losing weight eating that then my current situation of her cooking every night and having the junk food around. I am getting good at avoiding the junk food but weekends are hard.

Buffy- when I'm looking to go shopping, I check the sale papers of about four different grocery stores, and try to handle other business in those areas if possible to save on gas. For example: Yesterday, I stopped in route, at one store to get a few non-perishable items at one store, continued on to my barbershop, for a haircut, and then to the laundromat, which was across the street, and while my stuff was in the dryer, walked down to another grocery store, across the parking lot, to pick up a few items; on the way home, I made my last stop for a few more items, not being worried about the perishables because it was so cold outside. I also made it a point to stay as close to my shopping list, as possible, to avoid the impulse buys. BrenlL1 - salads are a mainstay of mine as well, making for some great chef salads with the addition of hard boiled eggs, cheese, and whatever leftover meat I might have around.

Update: I was able to get the Pork Butt Roast for $1.29/lb, they were marked down to a manager's special, so I got two of them. Another customer thought that was the on sale price, but, to his dismay, I'd gotten the last two at that price. :-)
