I am so disgusted with how horribly distorted the portion sizes have gotten over the years! It's insane. I have been eating some of the Atkins dinners and they are supposed to be one serving, but my goodness, who's serving? Amazingly they are enough & last me until the next meal, but I find myself asking....where's the meat? Unfortunately we live in a world where the normal size hamburger is 1/3 pound now, with bacon & onion rings & heaven knows what on them & restaurants serve enough food on their plate to take home for dinner & lunch the next day. It all has warped my mind so that I feel like I'm being cheated when I eat what I should. I'm really focusing on portions now. Measure, weigh, divide.....it is very important!

We all still eat like we work 12 hrs a day outside on the farm.

Restaurants don't even use plates anymore. They use platters.

It is scary to find out just how bad we are to ourselves. I have been dealing with the smaller portions of meat and carbs by subbing in hearty veggies (the chomping seems to help).

One of the things that Weight Watchers used to advocate (at least 5 years ago anyway) was to ask the server for a to go box & a small plate as soon as your food was served. Then pack up everything that exceeded your actual portion size. Therefore the only food on the table in front of you was the food you should be eating, and you weren't tempted to take that extra bite. I know carrying around a set of measuring spoons & cups is a royal pain, but it did work. When I finally was able to get portion sizes down in my mind to eyeball a plate; that fist size portion = 1 cup, that thumb width/length piece of cheese = 1 oz. Too bad we get lazy, or stop bothering to do these things, because it's just easier to sit with all the skinny people at the table and pretend that we're the same. You Hang in There! It's very important, and you are not being cheated!

Don't blame the restaurants. Ultimately, only you have the power to put in your mouth what you choose. My family owns a restaurant, and we have healthier options for our customers to choose from. Most people just don't choose the healthier foods.

I don't blame restaurants for making me eat what they serve. I simply hate the way it became more economical to make more. I understand that. It's what makes this country great. It just helped to warp what I came to think of a single serving.

Oddly enough a Duke University study showed if there are healthy items on a menu your brain tells you it's ok to order non healthy items. They called it vicarious goal fulfilment. You go in for a salad but leave with fries because your brain is telling you since you saw the healthy item you fulfilled your goal of being healthy.
