HCB's Journal, 17 January 2015

Greetings Buddies!

So, the experiment continues...and it is interesting to me!

I am better understanding the LowCarbHighFat process; and enjoying the food change and energy level.

BUT..I need help understanding how to measure my progress.

I have GAINED MUSCLE in the last two years - maybe 15 pounds - YET I am wearing pants that fit when I weighed about 25 pounds LESS.

YES, muscle weighs more than fat. I have lost inches and gotten smaller since I have replaced fat with muscle.

SO, I cannot really use the Idiot Box scale. I use my clothes and a measuring tape to see where I am these days.

I can wear size 16 pants loosely (down from size 22) and this week
I LOST one inch on my waist, one inch on my under boob measure, and one inch off my hips.

Should I consider it progress? Should I invest in a body fat scale?
What best works for you folks?

The word of the week:
Patience

I am dedicated, determined, and diligent.

Wish I could help you. Perhaps some of those who are working out will see this and will respond. I'm really impressed.

Wow! 15lbs in 2 years?! That's awesome! Congrats on the progress! And, that's exactly what it is... PROGRESS! The more muscle you have, the more calories get burned. I measure my gains with a scale that does it all for me. I jump on there once a day, or every other day just to see if there's any fluctuations. I also have a measuring tape and body fat caliper to log my losses/gains every weekend or so... I log everything, including what I eat, my workouts, etc... To me, progress is how you feel, first and foremost. If you go from being a couch potato to wanting to get out there and do something, that's progress. Clothes fitting more loosely is a second to me, but not that big of a deal. Measuring everything is a third. Tape measure, body fat calipers, and the good old fashioned scale in the bathroom. I bought a scale that does it all for me, from Amazon. It's called a Surpahs Sense-On. While I'm not sure the numbers are 100% accurate, it gives me a good baseline on my progress. You should check it out... It was less than $40, I believe. Another confidence booster is to plot/chart-out your progress in MS Excel. Oddly, I feel a strong sense of accomplishment seeing a line graph with my starting weight, where I am on a weekly basis, and my goal weight. Sometimes it's frustrating, but in the grand scheme of things, it's super nice on the eyes. :) I'm hoping to be at my ideal fitness level in a year or less. I'll post my chart when I get there. Haha! I hope this information was at least entertaining. Best of luck to you!

It's totally progress! I don't know about the scale--I don't have one. But you are clearly healthier, and probably feeling better physically and emotionally as your size drops, so what's not progress?

That is incredible. I do know that muscle is flat and smoother than fat that can be lumpy and shapeless so that is probably why you can have more muscle yet wear a smaller size. You are doing so great!

I am sooooo impressed with your progress! You are totally burning up fat now and building healthy muscle. Flips1de was totally right about the more muscle you have to more fat you burn which gave you that lovely inch loss off your weight. Looking at your picture in your profile makes me think you are on the right path. You just needed firming up. You already look a fantastic size! Scales mean nothing. The inch loss tells the story. I am so proud of you!

If I were you and you are satisfied with how things are going, I would forget about all the extras. There comes a time when you have to let go of the disease and learn to live. When I get to goal, I am throwing out the scale!

We try to lose weight so we will fit into a smaller size, and be healthier, right? Seems like that is what is happening for you. Success? Ummm, heck yeah!

I would LOVE to get rid of my scale. Only problem is, if I don't weigh myself every day, I tend to put on weight, thinking out of sight, out of mind. Weighing for me is like checking the balance on your checking account. You can't manage money if you don't know how much you have. I can't effectively manage my body without knowing how much weight is in the bank. It's just me. I didn't weigh myself for years and now I have gotten to weigh myself at least 5 days a week. If your clothes and measuring tape are telling you a good story, then maybe you need to stick with that. The scale isn't the only thing that can gauge how your are doing with your body. It's up to you and your choice and what you feel comfortable with.
