NowIunderstand's Journal, 20 December 2014

I just saw Oprah on Dr. Oz recently. She was there promoting her new movie. (of course, guest appearances always have an angle to sell something, it's never just about showing up)

Anyway, she said something very interesting, which I think I'll try to put into practice with every action I take.

She said that everything she does is with intent. (meaning that she's aware of her intent with all of her actions)

Which, really, in a therapy in my 30's was something that I learned to do. To realize that my actions all have an outcome, so is the action I'm doing going to bear the fruits I want? And, what is the action that will give me the results I want.

If I took this on a more mundane level in ATF, I could ask the following question. What is my intent in eating this plate of whatever. Is my intent to nourish myself, to give myself pleasure, to just drown some anxiety I'm experiencing, to satisfy my hunger?

It does have a connection to being mindful in what you're eating.

I think I'll put this into practice. My intent in this is to steer my eating habits into wanting to eat to live and not eat for entertainment, self medication or anything else. At least, be conscious of why I'm eating and also accepting that sometimes I will eat for the pure pleasure , but at least acknowledging it and monitoring the frequency so it doesn't forsake my health and vanity goals.

Anyway, Oprah should join FS, as she's not made any progress in her weight issues, but not at all. You'd think with private chefs, and everyone to do her daily chores, keeping a healthy regimen diet would be much easier for her. She must have issues she's not dealt with or even acknowledged. Dieting starts in the brain.

I've always wondered about that too... all those resources and still the same battle we common folks endure. I wonder if it's not a 'home' situation as much as it could be business dinners, cocktail parties, etc... that just take their toll and she can't have an entourage slapping the food out of her hand in public..

That's true, I never thought of that. She must be faced with temptations much more than the common folk. But on the other hand, with her power, she may be able to arrange it to have alternative foods on the menu, and good tasty foods. (I would think) I know she has millions but I'm sure that the weight battle has been her cross to bear, and it has always put a shadow on her wealth, celebrity status etc. Because if you don't feel good in your own body/persona, you carry that everywhere you go. To some, it wouldn't matter.(luckily or unluckily for them)

I know what you mean - I think she & Kirsty Alley are the two most known for their yoyo weight loss; I've had that same thing, massive loss/gain and am so glad I'm not in the public eye to have every 10lbs scrutinized by people who don't really know me. Well, I guess they do... I know everyone judges strangers.. but I'm not on the front of magazines. I think their situation is what bothers me as I feel this regain happening YET again. What if all that clean food, etc., has nothing to do with it? What if this is just my own body, my own norm .. as much as it's theirs?? I know this reads like I'm a big Oprah fan, I'm not. Well, I don't dislike her but I don't think I've ever watched her talk show, followed her book club or magazine or the kind of devotion many women have for her. But I do think, as you wrote, she's an amazing and powerful woman... and maybe... at the end of the day .. she's just like the rest of us. Not perfect.. and weight is her imperfection as a human being.
