Instantcrazy's Journal, 14 December 2014

I have been a vegetarian for exactly 1 Year TODAY!!! :D How exciting is that? It's been fairly easy too! Have I missed meat? Sure. I'm vegetarian because I feel no other living being should have to die so that I can live. YES, I know I step on bugs, etc., and my favorite that most people say when they find out I'm vegetarian is "bacon". Sure I miss it, but it's also REALLY BAD FOR YOU. I just can't contribute to a life being taken. My choice. I'm not judging anyone else for their choices.

I'm also healthier (I think). I had to go to the doctor to get a wellness check up for my health insurance. I've only read the results online, but I think I'm reading them right and they are all looking good to me. I'm not a doctor, but I play one in my mind. Here are my results (any medical professionals out there can tell me if I'm reading it wrong). The first number will be my results from May 2011 the second number is my current result.

Cholesterol Total 214 down to 164
Triglycerides 159 down to 66
HDL Cholesterol 64 up to 65 (that's good, right???)
LDL cholesterol 118 down to 86

My doctor wanted me to go on meds, at 38. I said um, no. This was all done with a change in eating.

These next numbers, I have no idea. They're all in the standard range except the Chloride.

Calcium 8.4 to 8.2 not good
Glucose 94 to 87 that's good right?
BUN huh?? 12 to 15
Creatinine 0.95 to 0.66
Sodium 137 to 141
Potassium 4.5 to 4.1
Chloride 107 to 110 does this mean I'm dehydrated?
CO2 24.2 to 25

Anyone want to translate this for me?

The top 4 are excellent. Bringing them down without meds is amazing. Losing weight will do the same thing. Good for you. Hope someone can come by and interpret the other labs for you.

Plants are alive too. . . You don't mind noshing on them. If they were dead, they would be brown and dried and crispy.

Good for you on being a vegetarian! I respect your stand on the issue. All the medical journals point out that lifestyle is so much healthier for the body. Congratulations on your complete year!

Awesome!! I have been making vegetarian meals and my family doesn't even know. I found some meatballs that I use and made meatball subs with cheese and they didn't know the difference. I make hot dogs, spaghetti and meatballs, tacos and use vegetarian meat and they don't know the difference. I just cant stand meat any more. So good for you!

Dorthy, I have a black thumb. I can't keep a plant alive to save my life. Actually I do realize plants are alive. Native Americans often thank the plants for offering their life. The three sister plants have a very symbiotic relationship, but have you ever seen a plant mourn the death of other plants? There is a difference between being alive and having life. LIKE I SAID, I'm not judging anyone for their choices, this just happens to be mine.

Thanks Kattay! It is work sometimes. You can eat just as unhealthy on vegetarian as any diet. It has cleared up a lot of my girlfriend's digestive issues. I do all the cooking so she is vegetarian by proxy. lol

Thanks, Suzi, very sneaky! Good job! lol It's amazing how good vegetarian food is. Do they ever read the package and question you, or do you slip it all into ziplock bags? There are a lot of really good recipes on YouTube for veggie "meats" have you tried any of those?

I'm not a doctor but i have a biology degree. Sodium should be low (not too low) and potassium should be higher (not too high). I don't know what the numbers mean but going up in sodium and down in potassium can't be good. You need more potassium than sodium for proper nerve function. You can definitely change that with diet. For example, I don't use salt in anything and buy no salt added products wherever available. Instead, I use French's No Salt sodium free salt substitute. It has potassium instead of sodium so killing 2 birds with one stone. Can't do anything about the sodium in plants and wouldn't want to. We do need some. All the Morning Star Farms products have a lot of salt. Your mileage may very.

Just poking a bit for fun. I know how you feel, and respect you choices. Hope your dieting goes well.

Instantcrazy, congrats on the bloodwork!!! so many people think vegetarian is boring. Not the case at all. I'll have to try the potassium.

Dorothy, sorry if I seemed really defensive. You would be surprised how many people tell me stuff like that in seriousness.sadly the majority of those people are my own family.

Family is usually on the sabotage course, for me as well. (Oh, come on one little taste won't hurt, etc.)

Congrats. Was vegetarian for a year back in '88/89 and had a very difficult time with my family and friends at that time. I reintroduced seafood into my diet, and still had issues. Moved to AZ in '93, and reintroduced poultry to my diet. 21 years later am still having to deal with "stupid" people. My sister has Crones, and has had to adopt a vegan diet. Thankfully there is a growing enlightened group of restaurateurs, but it's a limited group. Definitely try to stay away from ingredients with a high sodium content. Blood Pressure, Heart Attack & Stroke issues run in my family, so have learned since my early teens, that salt is NOT your friend. Many dishes can be made as flavorful with the use of alternative spices like "Mrs Dash", without adding the sodium.

Thanks wholefoodnut and for the translation msbuggirl. I've tried the no salt before I'll have to give it another try.

You know I'm not a vegetarian, but eat that way much of the time. I would have sabotage issues with my family and friends for sure if I was. :))) After eating turkey the last couple weeks I'm back to mostly plant based, my body certainly likes it better.

Oops just found 1/2 of 1/2 of an orgainic chicken breast from sat that needs to be used. So tomorrow back to plants. Don't want to re-freeze it.

lol it's better that you eat it than waste it.

Dinner was the chicken coated in a bit of barley flour, fried in a small amount of coconut oil. I haven't liked cooking with coconut but tried a 3rd brand. This one I like, no heavy greasy feel or taste. A 1/2 of baked acorn squash, also needing to be finished. Good dinner.

Congratulations on one year of vegetarianism! I stopped eating meat 12 years ago for the same reason. My health has definitely been better since :)
