jmb3450's Journal, 10 December 2014

I seem to be at a plateau with my weight and I'm not sure why, I'm at 218.5 this morning and have had a hard time losing this week despite eating below my RDI, logging everything carefully and stepping up my exercise. My body "feels" thinner and I think I see a difference in the mirror but that is all subjective stuff. In the past I've had success taking off 5 to 10 pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas but I was starting from a much heavier/fatter place than I'm at now.

As far as exercise I've been doing some vigorous cycling for 45 to 50 minutes each evening. 35 to 40 minutes at around 114bpm heart rate (70% of maximum) and bumping up to as high as 140bpm (85% of maximum) for the last 10 to 15 minutes. So if the heart rate monitor on the exercise cycle is accurate that's a decent cardio workout. When weather and my workload cooperates I also get in a 2 1/2 mile walk during lunch

Sodium in my diet - think I need to watch that more closely. We ordered out for chinese over the weekend and a couple nights ago I made some chicken chili using canned beans, tomatoes, sauce, and pre-packaged seasoning. After entering it into my food diary I saw the sodium was sky high which could account in part for my body hanging on to weight. Also I did my cycling right after the chili dinner and experienced some chest discomfort, had to take a couple short breaks at first until the discomfort subsided and that's not normally an issue. I attribute that to too much sodium.

Numbness and pain in my left leg is getting better, sometimes during the night I wake up and it's almost all gone and feels close to normal. I guess when I'm lying down the pressure is off nerves that have been damaged in my lower back, but it also must have something to do with increased exercise and weight loss. Despite not getting positive confirmation on the scale I continue to feel physically better. So I'll continue with what I have been doing.

JMB, it is time to quit worrying about the number but focus on the feeling! If you feel good stick with it and work through it! We add muscle but burn fat in the cycle of losing weight. If you are happy then it must be right!

You're probably right and it's because of eating too much sodium. When you stick to healthy foods for a couple of days you will see a drop on the scale. Your exercise regime looks great, keep it up :-)

Sadly almost everything canned is high in sodium, I take FOREVER to grocery shop anymore because I check the sodium level in literally every item I buy....luckily though, a lot of brands are coming out with lower sodium or salt free variations on canned stuff....thank goodness!

Yup, there's tons of sodium in most canned stuff. Most of the time I avoid too much of it but made the chili in a hurry using what was in the pantry. Next time I'll use fresh tomatoes (well, as fresh as the grocery store ones can be anyway). If I plan ahead I can use dried beans also.

I'm going the dried bean route lately too...it's great if you're not in a hurry like you said...

I am gradually switching to dried beans - down to a couple of cans. Great exercise program, JMB.

I agree with what everyone is saying here, for sure. Jim - sounds like you are doing all the right things and if you stay on your path, it will come off. Good work!
