GLAMMER's Journal, 21 September 2014

Hi everyone, sorry I haven't been on here for awhile. #1, my old computer has been behaving very badly lately, & I don't know when my daughter will FINALLY get around to going through the last of their moving boxes & find the RAM for it, which is "hiding" in one of them. #2, I had a colonoscopy FEB, & saw, as the Dr warned me beforehand, that because I've been taking cascara sagrada capsules for years to prevent constipation, the lining of my intestines is stained a yucky-looking blackish color. I freaked out when I saw it in the readout he gave me, & stopped taking cascara "cold turkey". NOT a good idea! Since then I've had pretty serious constipation, but it got worse about 3 weeks ago. About 2 weeks ago I had a Dr visit & told her about the problem. She is an Osteopath, & does manipulations that do wonders for my Osteo Arthritis. This time she did some special manipulations that focused on my constipation, but they had little or no effect. About a week & a half ago we were heading into the city, & I was feeling pretty miserable. Even leaning forward a bit as we often do to type on the computer, or even to eat (we use tray tables)made me very nauseous. So I called my Dr's office & said we'd be in town & was there any way I could talk to someone about this while there. They arranged for me to meet with an RN who was very nice, & she told me to buy a bottle of citrate of magnesia & a Fleet's enema. Won't go into details beyond that, but let's just say the effect was (again) minimal. This really surprised & concerned me, as this combo should have fixed me right up. The nurse told me that I might have an upper intestinal blockage, which made me even more worried when that combo had so little effect. BUT, she also said that if those 2 things didn't work well, that a patient of hers whose Mom is a retired RN told her of a mixture that her Mom swears by. This RN has shared this mixture with several other patients who had good results with it. It sounds & tastes horrible, but this mixture fixed me right up. It is: 1/3 cup coffee, 1/3 cup prune juice & 1/3 cup Milk of Magnesia. I took a teeny taste & sure enough, it was horrible! So I just held my breath & gulped it down, then chased it with a few sips of Coke to remove the taste. Now, I don't want to get in trouble if someone tries this & has any problems, so use it at your own risk, but I'm just saying it worked wonders for my problem. Sorry to bend your ears talking about something so "icky", but if my story can ever help someone else who has similar problems to find relief, it's worth any ickyness & embarrassment involved. BTW, I've gained 2 lbs since my last weigh-in, but I'm chalking it up to this problem, & will just keep doing my best til my next weigh-in, which will hopefully be better. Hugs & Blessings to You All, <3 GLAMMER <3

Glammer, Intestinal issue can certainly wreck your day to be sure. I can sympathize with what you are going though. BTW that concoction? I don't do Coffee, and the MoM has to taste nasty ( cuz it is a medicine, and that is the law of medicines- lol) but the prune juice believe it or not was a staple in my house growing up. Maybe try a small glass a day till you get stabilized. Im jus sayn.......

Thank you for your suggestion, Papaw. I am drinking a small glass of prune juice some days, I love prune juice, but my only problem with it is that it has about 180 cals a glass, & when you're counting calories that's a lot. On most days I use a fantastic product (with 0 calories) called Miralax. You're sure right about the MOM tasting yucky! Mixing it with prune juice & coffee did NOT help the flavor either. When I got so bad the Miralax wouldn't work, that's when I knew I needed help fast. BTW, my Mom & Dad were "Grammy & Papaw" to our 3 girls while growing up. You are so blessed to have grandchildren! Many folks take this for granted, but of our 3 DD's, 1 is unable to have children, 1 is divorced twice w/no children, & 1 & her Hubby have been trying for 2-3 years, but so far no luck. We're still hopeful that maybe someday...In the meantime, we enjoy our 4 "furbabies", 2 dogs (Yorkie & mutt), & 2 cats. Not quite as much fun, but they'll do in a pinch, hee hee. Have a great day, & "make good (food) choices"!
