How is everyone?

Found a giant blue storage tub of pre-pregnancy clothing from before I was pregnant with my youngest. Sizes range from 2 to 10. So I've been going through and hanging up any in the guest bedroom that are too small, setting aside the too large for a cousin who is a size 10 and putting those that fit in my closet =) Unfortunately any of the jeans that were hemmed to wear with flatter shoes are too short now. I have the same growth disorder my boys have and continued to grow into my 20s, I'm more then an inch and half taller then I was before my youngest's pregnancy when I was 24... Gauging based on the fit of the hemmed pants at least an inch of that growth was in my legs o.0 I guess on the pairs that fit or will fit I could hem up to capris or shorts. Decision for another time. Not a ton of tops in the tub (and those that are tend towards the size 2 rather then size 6 or above) but a lot of skirts and pants. Including some favorite skirts I thought were long lost =) So last night was very fun trying stuff on that wouldn't have fit me in 2013- going to finish that up today.

My oldest took his CLE/GLE Missouri Language Arts standardized tests Tuesday. We use those to fill the record of evaluation requirement in the Missouri Homeschool Laws. He scored in the 98 percentile for 2nd grade with the test placing him in 5th grade. The grade that corresponds with his chronological age in public school- although if we had put him in public school he would have been in First Grade this year. He's a summer baby right before the grade cut off and with his growth disorder, social and motor setbacks we would have put him in where he'd be the oldest and bridge some of the gap rather then the youngest with no hope at being on par with his peers.

The 98 percentile is a little deceptive because one of the disabilities Tristian has is Non Verbal Learning Disability- which is often misdiagnosed as gifted. The children end up with average knowledge and learning ability as they get older, but when they are younger they learn more rapidly and have a higher learning ceiling then their age-wise peers. This is traded off with motor and social problems as well as often having issues with how to communicate what they know- like Tristian's inability to write things down on paper without seeing them first- even if he can say them, form the letters and spell the words. He is physically incapable of taking them directly from his head and putting them on paper without transitioning somewhere else first (that's where the non verbal as the disability name comes from) which in our case means he tells me the words, spells them out and I write them on a chalk board for him to copy. Luckily the tests are taken on the computer and whatever keeps him from physically writing words without seeing them first does not affect his typing. Anyways- against the national averages he looks really high right now, but against peers with his disability he would probably be more normal. Also he will eventually slow down and test more normal as he ages. Only rarely are there children with this disability who are also Gifted, so it's possible he will continue to test above his age-wise peers into adulthood, but not likely.

Anyways, have a great Thursday!

I applaud you for being a Homeschooler. And if they both develop into "Average" adults, Hallelujah! Nothing wrong with being average, and you're probably right; if left up to the public schools, they would be treated as 'gifted' when young, and ruined, both emotionally and intellectually, as they developed into adults.

Homeschooling is obviously a great choice when their teacher is mom, who knows so much more about his needs than most teachers would. Yay for you and yay for finding fun clothes!

Thanks DK! We are all about shooting for average here =) If he ends anywhere near average on social and motor we will be beyond thrilled and average on intellectual stuff will be great too. Traumatized is exactly what often happens with this disability. As the child ages and cantcontinue at a gifted level parents and teachers believe the child is choosing not to. While the child is struggling and can't understand why he can no longer meet his parents and teachers expectations. It's a bad experience for all involved but especially the child. By homeschooling we can just continue to teach Tris at his level...whatever that level is as he ages, without him being aware it's unusual for his rate of learning and learning cieling to be falling behind his previous age to grade ratio ;-)

I really hope I get this "growth disorder" you have ;) at 5'1" I'd like maybe a couple inches so I could wear normal clothing! Anyway, you sound like a great teacher-mom with your attentiveness to your kids' needs!

lol Marrisa, the height is nice (I was just under 4'11" when I met my husband at 19yrs old- now just a smidge over 5'3" at 29yrs old). So I feel you on the being short thing. However the spine and nerve issues that have come along with the untreated growth disorder aren't so fun- girls are short... right? No one realized I had a growth disorder until doctors realized both my boys do and went back over my charts. They just thought I was suppose to be really short =p By the time we knew the damage was done (and diagnosed as something else, lol) Thanks for the compliment on the schooling. I'm sure there are some things I don't do as well as a school teacher could, but I think it's a fair trade off in this situation for my oldest.
