Hermiones Mom's Journal, 08 September 2014

So I am struggling just a bit. I've had some days when I was too hungry to stay at 1350 calories. So I've eaten a bit more -- and at least it hasn't been bad stuff. I think it's been harder because of all the dietary restrictions I've been dealing with. Now, I'm eating most all cooked vegetables-- have had Brussels sprouts but not cauliflower or broccoli. Next week I'll try cauliflower so I have more low-carb options, and I'm also going to try a smoothie with the frozen raw strawberries, so that if I can tolerate the raw fruit, I have more options to satisfy the ice cream craving without the sugar. I think that will help. Those smoothies are very filling in the afternoon when I am trying to bridge from lunch to dinner. Why is this so hard????

I find that if I eat a lot of protein (still working on increasing it), I do better. I have milk, eggs, and yogurt every lunchtime. Then I have meat, usually chicken, for dinner. It helps.

I was about to suggest the same as Msbuggirl: eat the extra calories in protein if possible. I know you have some food restrictions but you can probably find a protein powder that meets your needs. A nice smoothie will take away hunger with nutritious calories.

I still think you are doing just awesome! I wouldn't worry as much about the calories ... eat when you are hungry ... just wisely ... like you are doing.

msbuggirl-- I know you are right: I need to push more protein into my diet to stave off hunger. When I did this the first time, I was using Unjury protein powder. I was a little afraid to try this again because it is whey protein and has aspartame, and with my now extreme lactose intolerance and sensitivity to artificial sweeteners... well, I hesitated. Can you recommend another protein powder?

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard powders are high quality and good tasting. Another product is VitaSport that can be purchased through your local NutriShop. Just Google NutriShop to see if there is one near you. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard can be ordered online.

So many of the proteins do contain whey and/or casein. I like garden of life protein powders and Sun Warrior.

Also pea proteins like Olympic Labs.

Ooh one more, Jarrow's brown rice protein. OK. I'm done, I'm sure I have more (Vega) but I'll stop now.

HCB- Optimum Nutrition Gold standard is whey protein -- and it says 'low lactose' not 'lactose free'. It does contact lactase though -- so maybe that makes it more digestible...
