bigbassbrent's Journal, 27 August 2014

Almost exactly one year ago my doctor told me I needed to make some serious changes or I would become diabetic. From that day forward, I changed my life. I just got my lab results back from the dr appointment I went to this past Monday. I am going to post both my old (one year ago) and new results. Overall the doctor was very happy with my transformation. He said, “I sure wish more people would do what you have done.” That made me feel good.

When looking at the old lab result numbers, take into account that I was on blood pressure and cholesterol medications at the time.

OLD NEW
Weight (lbs) 217 176
Blood Pressure 132/83 120/67
Blood Sugar 120 121
A1C N/A 5.2
Total Cholesterol 173 189
HDL Cholesterol 40 49
LDL Cholesterol 98 120
Triglycerides 173 98
Non-HDL Cholesterol 133 140

Overall my doctor was pleased with the results. Even though my fasting blood sugar is above normal, the A1C test that I requested revealed that my average blood sugar over three months was an 86, which he told me is perfectly normal. My blood sugar rises quite a bit when I go for several hours without eating. I control this by eating every 3 hours or so but when I fast for my lab tests, it shoots way up. The good news is that the threat of diabetes has subsided. Yay!!!

He noted that my good cholesterol is much higher and since I am no longer taking medications, my cholesterol panel is nothing that he is worried about. I was afraid he was going to try to put me back on meds, thank goodness he didn’t! I eat low sugar and high fat. So my LDL, although increased quite a bit, is not alarming because you will find that when someone eats very little sugar, they will have large fluffy LDL particles which are not harmful like the smaller dense LDL particles which can be found in people who eat sugar and fat together. There are special tests for particle size but they are not commonly run.

I celebrated with the family last night by dining on a Sonic double meat cheese burger and fries. First real burger I’ve had in a year. It was delicious, but it hurt my stomach for a few hours afterwards. That’s ok, I will still do it again next time I have something to celebrate!  Worth it!!

Sorry about skipping out on posting the tips lately. I still have a lot more, I just haven’t had the time to put them together and post. I’ll get one out tomorrow and Friday for sure.

I hope everyone is doing great!

That are great news. Congrats on your willpower.

Thanks you all! I wouldn't say it has been so much of my "willpower" but more the "will" to live a normal non-medicated life. When you look at a cheeseburger and fries and envision an early heart attack or even death, it helps make the decisions much easier. Food does kill if you do it all wrong. Food also cures if you do it right. :)

Your blood sugar RISES when you go three hours without eating? Then something isn't right. Your sugar should DROP when you are burning fuel and then rise again when you refuel your body. I often find myself in the low 60s when I don't eat and then a piece of fruit brings me back near 100 where I belong. That A1C is great, as are the triglicerides. That overall cholesterol is a shade high but it all depends on when they drew the blood. After years of diabetic blood work, I know you can really jury rig the numbers. Overall your changes were very positive. Now stay out of places like Sonic.... LOL!

I should have been more clear Eddie. This only seems to happen in the morning after my liver dumps it's morning sugar into my bloodstream. Immediately when I wake up I am usually about 96-110. If I eat something then it will stay around those numbers. If I don’t eat, then it will continue to slowly rise. I think it has something to do with eating fairly low carb. When I went to the doctor I tested right when I work up and was 101, then 2 hours later, right before my appointment I was 112. I tested when I got back from the doctor and I was 127, which was about 3 hours post waking up and 12 hours since I had last eaten. I ate some eggs, sausage and avocado, worked out and then tested again. Back down to 107. I have read some stuff about how some people don’t handle the liver’s morning glycogen dump very well. It seems like my insulin works fine when I eat food, but my insulin does not work very well on the glycogen released by my liver. I need to study this more to fully understand.

Congratulations!! I don't know much about diabetes, but when I've done research for a friend of mine, the best site I found was BloodSugar101. Very informative!

Thanks Diana, I'll check it out.

very encouraged to see your report! I am at the beginning of your journey - high cholesterol, prediabetic - gotta make these changes myself. Thanks for sharing the results of your last year's efforts.

Okay. That is known as Dawn Phenomenon. Absolutely correct that your liver dumps sugar. I asked about that exact thing MANY times. How I could go to bed with a reading of 108, sleep 8 hours, have nothing but water, and wake up to 150.... Doesn't diabetes royally suck?

twahlhowe , If you need any advice just let me know. I have spent a lot of time researching these topics. I'm not an expert but I think I have learned a few valuable things this past year. :)

Eddie, your right, blood sugar is very weird and confusing for sure. I will research the Dawn Phenomenon but if I remember correctly there is not much you can do about it. I plan to experiment with casein protein before bed since it is slow digesting. I have found that if I eat something (not carbs) right before bed, my sugar is lower the next morning.

LDL normally bumps up on a low carb diet. Looks like you've done great to me. Don't let them try to micromanage the numbers. Health is health. BP is awesome. Keep it up. You have a lot of good years ahead of you.

Thanks NM! I'm upping the carbs to 100-120g per day from here forward. I will see where that gets me at my next check up in 6 months.

BBB: Whoot whoot! Very encouraged by your success. What a great story. And super congratulations on getting off the meds. The side effects from those can be such a pain - and now you no longer have to deal with all that! Glad you enjoyed the Sonic... but even more glad you won't be returning there too soon. Wishing you continued success!
