DairyKing's Journal, 25 August 2014

Good Morning, FS Warriors! Well, almost time to reitire the lazy spirit. One of my hamstrings hasn't quite given up the fight, but I can't wait forever to get back on track. I have learned three important lessons from this race: 1) Pick my races more carefully. Those hills were not a good option for a first time 10K'er. I did not train for hills. I didn't even do any speedwork; my goal was to finish my first 10K standing up - which I did. 2) Scope out the course first. Just looking at it on a map didn't do it justice. See note for lesson 1. 3) Schedule my races for the cooler months. I know I won't heed this lesson, because the one race on my bullet list - the hilly 15K in Peoria - typically happens on the hottest day of the year. However, it's probably a good rule.

I'm going to be working on a new training strategy. My method has worked so far, such as it is, but I'm not working hard enough on hard days, and not resting enough in between. I think instead of running 5 or 6 days a week, I'm going to go for 3 or 4, but with speed and hill workouts and easy long runs each week, and rest in between. I think as you get older, you can still get faster and stronger, but you need more recovery time in between. We will see.

I worked out on the Weider Ultimate bench this morning, the first workout since the race on Saturday. Geez, the race seems so long ago already, and it hasn't been two whole days already. The only reminder I have is the medal and a sore hamstring. It feels really good to have run a 10K in a competitive environment. If I had waited until I was truly ready, I probably would have never run one. sometimes you just have to go for it. Kind of like jumping out of planes in the Army; if I waited until I wasn't afraid, I would have never done it. Of course, there's my FS Support also. Would I have run this 10K this weekend if I hadn't already told my FS Friends I was going to do it? I really don't know. I am somewhat of a procrastinator, and I think there is something to this accountability thing here on FS, even though I know there is no real consequences if I fail.

So, here we are again. I hope to be back to running tomorrow morning, and walking, leisurely riding my bicycle, or doing something less intensive on the rest days. Now I can get more serious about this weight loss thing. Well, anyway, that's my thoughts for this morning. I know it's Monday, and it's difficult yet to be cheerful, but here's wishing everyone a wonamous week! Toodles!

Referencing putting it out there to the FS community... it makes me stand true to my word and myself. I think that's the reason I open up about it. Keeping my word to myself. You did an amazing job with the race and you should be proud of your accomplishment. Wishing you well on the hamstring recovery.

I'm so proud of you for finishing under those conditions. Congrats on your accomplishment. I look forward to hearing about future races with your new preparation process. Take care.

Great job at the run and at the reassessment of the run afterwords. Speed/Hill work will not only help improve your running, but it can take some of the boredom out of training, too.

Thanks, Everyone! I was just telling a friend that even though that race was a killer, knowing myself, I will probably have to schedule it again next year, to see how much better I do. But I guarantee you my next 10K will be flatter - and faster. Haha! No guts, no glory, Right?

I've got to get that book, "Running until you're 100," . . . just in case.

We mostly miss life by waiting for the moment we will feel ready - you did a great job by just doing it.
