chesgreen's Journal, 25 August 2014

Brought 2 bags into the office: My regular backpack and a cloth supermarket bag full of stuff to prevent me from making bad decisions.

Adjusted my RDI after figuring out how to manually enter a number vs what FS was setting it too. Ready to really, really stick to my RDI no matter what.

Have a great and successfull week everyone.

Thanks jwil77nc2. I really needed to hear that. I am looking at my numbers, making the necessary corrections and I WILL beat this thing. I have only been fat since college so I am trying to replace 20 years of bad habits with new healthy ones.

Takes time and perserverence to reverse old habits, still working on that myself

Great job planning ahead. I think that makes all the difference.

1800 cals for you is reasonable. You can stick to your RDI if you plan carefully. With the right foods you won't be hungry. When you're not starving you have no cravings. The only thing left then are our bad habits, eating when not hungry. Then I keep myself busy and it works.

How did/do you calculate a more realistic RDI ? I'm eating much less than an adjusted/accurate one i think would really like to know how much so. thx

I never readjusted my RDI.. but a thought came to mind.. when cooking leftovers in a microwave-- and not sure how long you need to cook it.. what do you do? Cook it a little at a time...and see how it is.. if you cook it too long, you can over cook it and ruin it.. Same with your adjustment..adjust it a litle downward (maybe like 200 calories at a time) and see how you feel, react, etc etc.. if you feel you can go lower, go lower-- but you need to keep a minn level for survival (1200 I believe-- if I am wrong, then sorry)... Remember aprox 3500 calories equals to one pound... so you want to loose one pound a week.. eat 500 calories a day less, two pounds 1000, etc etc.... Also remember that this is a life time eating change, it is NOT a diet... a diet, once you reach your goal.. you might want to go back to your old ways, and gain that weight back.. but if you focus on, this is a life time eating habit change.. you are focus on eating healthier, and maintaining that weight loss.. that is my two cents worth Jimbo..

Chesgreen.. good luck!! Hope it works, my number one advise to you, is listen to your body.. if your body needs more calories- your adjustment is not a failure.. also make good calories choices, not bad ones.. (yes I still have cravings for candy, little debbies, etc etc lol)

@Jimbo - a lot of folks here use the website calculator.net to get their RDI. It's very easy to use. So easy, that at first, I didn't trust it. Went to a few different more complicated websites. The info from all of them came back within about 10 cal/day of the amount recommended by calculator.net. Give it a try then change your RDI here to guage percentages. Good luck!

And Chas, good luck to you too! Great idea to bring the good choices to work with you. You've mentioned that you have a stressful job. Work stress ALWAYS brought out the worst choices in me. It isn't so much that you consciously make bad decisions, you just need to stuff something, ANYthing in quickly so you can keep moving. Having the good choices planned and available is a great way to go! Have a successful week in all ways!

Hey Jimbo, I went to the section to calculate my RDI, I choose the option of loose 1lb (the max they would allow). It calculated my RDI to be 2000 calories. I found that you can enter a number there instead of what they suggest and click Save. Within FS, I study what and how much people eat and what type of physical activity they log. From what I gather, no matter what type of diet or food plan ou claim to be on or however one tries to spin it, it it all boils down to simply calories in calories out (your numbers don't lie). I work with numbers all day and it is only logical that as soon as I come to that understanding and apply it in my life, the scale will go in the direction I want it to. That being said, so far today, I've had 3 cups of coffee, breakfast, lunch and a snack, 32 oz of water, and 2 mile walk during a quick 1/2 hr break (1101 calories consumed so far and it is already 4:11 PM EST). I am done with food until tonight around 6 PM, where I will have a 70 calorie snack(packed it in my bag for my commute home). When I get home. I plan to do at least another 2 miles, take in 32 oz more of water, have a light dinner and I should be under my new RDI. Honestly, I think I have sabbotaged myself in the past by not keeping up with the water intake when I get. This is what has probably caused me to make to poor food choices after dinner. I am only human, but strongly believe that if I tighten my belt, focus on better food habits and moving my body, I will get healthier and closer to my ideal weight. Everyone's input is important and I value it. FS is making me a better person and I am taking the tips and individualizing them to my goals. Time to head home. Thanks everyone.

Thanks chesgreen. Appreciate your help. I'll try it.

@chesgreen. Went to change to 1 lb/week (which is what I had it set on anyway) and given my age, height, eight and with moderate activity, my RDI was still 2900 kcal

@JimboG after you click Calculate my RDI, you have an opportunity to change the value in the field next to Save my RDI. Try it from a computer. I had to scroll around a bit when using my phone to change the value.
