How many calories is considered starving oneself?

Comments
For ladies less than 600 calories a day I guess and for men less than 800? If I'm no mistaken.

I think under 1200 the body thinks its starving and gets stressed. Metabolism slows and the body holds on to everything. Or you lose a lot of weight and as soon as you eat more again (you can't eat that little forever) you gain weight back. I ate nearly nothing for a few months when I was 17 (not a good thing to do!!!) And went down to 46kg and then started eating again and went up to 53kg(a good weight for my height) within 2 weeks!

Gotta eat to keep the metabolism up. No point in being super skinny and being too unhappy, stressed and weak to enjoy it:-)

I agree with Njashka that 1200 calories is good for women. I heard that a 1000 calorie diet needs a doctor's supervision. For men, I don't know.

Rynni, you asking about starving oneself makes me think somebody close to you [your family, bf's family] thinks you are starving yourself. Your weight history shows that you are at your goal weight so you are where you want to be. If they are wanting you to stuff yourself, I'm sorry that you have stress from them.

Yep me too. My family is giving me a headache too is it not ok for a healthy-thin size person to watch what they eat? My family thinks i should EVERYTHING because i'm not big.

Hey all thanks for the tips definitely helps. I aim to eat at least 1400 calories a day because I am slowly coming back onto maintenance but unfortunately I have had days where I sit around 900 calories. I cannot mentally and physically eat big meals any more only breakfast really, and I don't want to ruin my progress. I was the binge drinking fast food eating teenager who thought that I wouldn't ever gain weight because my friends didn't. As for family well their concern is I'm going to turn to bulimia almost since I can't live without counting calories >_>

That's fine just eat 4 smaller meals a day. 400cal breakfast and the other 3 300cal and 100cal of snacks. Give or take.:-) you're probably looking really great and thin and thats when people start to worry for some reason. Good on you for giving up bad habits! I used to binge drink too. But didn't eat so was super unhealthy too.

^ For people who find it hard to eat enough calories, that was good advice on the four smaller meals, Njashka.

How many calories do you guys eat? And do you count them at all?

I count them all. Makes me feel better to know. I've just started calorie averaging by eating between 1300 and 1600 during the week and a bit more on sundays. Up to 2100 on sundays and try to keep it around 1900 on special days. If possible i try to do a few 1200 days after a higher calorie day.

I am trying to keep up a a maintenance of 2400 for me because I am active but I hate myself if I go past 1400 cals so it is going to be a hard road and pattern to break

Maybe don't set yourself such a high calorie goal start with maybe 1900 and see what your head and weight does?

That is a good idea =) I shall invest in that slowly, as of now chocolate always helps bring up the extra calories haha

Yes it does. I've been even skipping meals to save calories for chocolate which is a bad thing to do from a nutritional point of view but it's only sometimes:-)

Well it's really saving for those naughty calories we all deserve from time to time, we can't be perfect eaters forever

Njashka8 I feel guilty if u eat healthy all day and still have sweets and stay under calories. Which is weird that I beat myself up about it when I still eat far healthier then anyone I personally know.
