sweethart2912's Journal, 10 July 2014

emotional day yesterday spent all day with my mom and my niece from Fl. Mom's memory gets worse as each week passes, don't know how much longer she can live alone at home. Tomorrow we take her to the doctor and face the upset she is going to feel at being told she can no longer drive. I have been able to stay on plan but it has been challenging. Tomorrow will be a day when eating at home is not going to be possible so need to be wise in food choices.

Best of luck with the driving issue. When I worked as a nurse, I took a lot of phone calls from family members over that issue. Many hoped that the doctor could be the bad guy and not let on that a family member made the request. Sometimes, the DMV insisted and then it was easier. I took a few phone calls from the irate elderly person, though. That was HARD.

There are great food plans that can help, stabilize and actually reverse some of the cognitive lose in the elderly. I was just in a lousy physical rehab with an elder-care facility, and they were giving the exact opposite of what was needed and they had elderly who were lethargic from the overload of Non-complex Carbohydrates, and lack of protein and/or good fats. Fish was served at one meal a week and either fried or breaded or both. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables were a foreign idea and not served as part of each meal. Forget the idea of nice healthy tasty things like nuts, whole grains, hummus, buttermilk, frozen yogurt, and other things which can liven up a meal, and make anyone want to have a food plan. So I'm sure your Mom will feel better and be more attentive if you have modify her food intact a little... If she feels better you will be under less stress! I'm not an expert, check the articles out there on line there are a bunch of them. Go to the Registered and Certified Dietician and real medical sites, which are not selling things.... I wish you and your mom the best!

Best of Luck. I too care for aging parents, but I have 3 siblings to help. God Bless.
