no pain no gain

A common misconception is that pain is bad, and you should avoid it at all cost. I am here to argue on behalf of pain. What is pain? Why do we feel pain? and why should we feel pain once in a while?

What is pain?
Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. (wiki)

Why do we feel pain?
Pain motivates the individual to withdraw from damaging situations, to protect a damaged body part while it heals, and to avoid similar experiences in the future. (wiki)

Why should we feel pain?
The same goes for muscle tissue. when muscles are damaged through exercise; the resulting damage turns on a cascading sequence of signals that result in muscle hypertrophy. Soreness may result in muscle growth.

Muhammad Ali: I don't count my situps, I only start counting when it starts hurting

Another big pro of pain is the chemical reaction your body has to it. If you feel acute pain your "adrenaline" shoots up, giving you more strength, more endurance and you are more focused. After that comes its sweet brother "endorphin" which makes you able to endure the strain longer and you can handle more pain.

Robert Jordan: Sometimes, pain is all that lets you know you're alive.

The more often you feel pain, the more pain you can handle in the future. So if you ever find yourself in a "bad situation", you can react more rationally and be calm. (don't overreact in this Bwy!) And being used to handle pain gives you self confidence and pride.

Jim Morrison: You feel your strength in the experience of pain

pain is all consuming, making it hard for you to think of anything else. Pain can help you focus and reset. It can help reduce stress and worries. It can make you tired enough to fall asleep. Pain incites action, makes you motivated to change.

Sounds like I'm selling a bad drug (*lol*)

Sorry - but I'm on the other side. No pain? Good.

Excellent write up, Maud. It's rarely physical pain that I have to deal with. I think pain serves a purpose. "Get me out." That said, I draw a line between pain and anaerobic strength depletion. I'll be the first to recognize that the slogan "No anaerobic strength depletion, no gain" just won't sell on a t-shirt. It would be like Arnold in the Terminator saying, "I'll be returning in a moment."

i like that muhammad ali quote! Once I had a job with a psychotic manager that caused me such mental pain that I quit. It definitely motivated me to action because prior to that I never quit anything in my life and I swear I PTSD for a year afterwards.

I agree with some of what you are saying--that is I think I understand where you are coming from and affirm it, that pain isn't always something to be undesired or avoided. I think semantics will definitely impact your argument because this philosophy can easily be abused if read legalistically. Sometimes this discomfort is a warning that should be heeded; however, sometimes it's just a boundary to be extended through growth and perseverance. My basic premise is to all things there is a season and a purpose. Sometimes pain is essential, but in all things seek wisdom to know whether that season is now and for strength and courage to endure for the sake of growth. :)

As my hubby likes to say "Pain is just weakness leaving the body." That being said should be taken in conjunction with exercise as you obviously meant here.

I understand where you are coming from, I think.. but pain can be a sign that your body is telling you something. For example, my pain in my right knee. I know that my knee has been deteriorating for the last several years.. I started exercising, walking on treadmill and the stationary bike-- and last Thursday my right knee was telling me to stop. I did not, I paid for it that night, and continue to pay for it on Monday. It all depends what area of the body giving you the pain.. muscle pain is one thing, but joint pain is something entirely different.. Guess what I am saying.. is pay attention to what the pain is telling you...

some people seem to think i wrote: "If you feel pain ignore it and destroy your body" but i did NOT write that! *** I was just summarizing the benefits you get from feeling pain. Pain can be your friend, don't be afraid of it and don't hate it, but embrace its existence and live with it! *** @Hoos you should have listened to your body for sure! Pain helped you to be able to "ignore". But i bet you where not chased by a mountain lion, so there was no reason to endure the pain this time.
