Ruhu's Journal, 12 April 2014

Mom is ok, bruised & a bit sore, more tired & disoriented than usual, but holding her own for now. And, I may not have been clear about the retirement home where she lives, but they have been wonderful & attentive through it all. She's at a level of care there where before this accident, she was checked on daily in the evening (I just set that up when i was there last month as before that she wasn't checked on regularly at all.) and they help her with her tv, setting her alarm, and anything else she needs. When she fell out of bed during the night, it was away from the phone & emergency pull cord & she was not wearing the lifeline alarm necklace, so she had no way to alert them she had fallen & couldn't get up. When I couldn't reach her in the morning (Luckily she had asked me to call to be sure she was up in time to go on the bus to the grocery store. Other days, she calls me when she gets up which is usually much later.), I called the home & they went right up to check on her. I kept trying to call her & they answered when they arrived & found her and spoke with me as they were checking her vitals, getting her up and evaluating her. They've been checking her hourly since then, and will do so as long as needed.

I ordered a set of bed rails for her to be delivered today, and apparently not too soon as I got another call during the night that she pushed the call button at 12:30 last night to say she was half in & half out of the bed? They helped her again & she's slept peacefully since then. I read her the riot act about wearing the necklace at all times except when she showers. I can only hope she will now. Id been asking her too forever, but as with my past history with my sons, she too had to learn the hard way. The staff there has also been alerted to check each time that she has it on.

Yesterday was an exhausting, emotional day, and she feels horrible that she worried me so, but I was able to pray & breathe through it… a good cry helped too, as did the love & support here and IRL. Once again, I'm am ever so appreciative for you all! I slept well last night, but not long & was up at 4:30.

We rescheduled the dinner with our friends until May when they can go earlier, and are still deciding if we'll meet for drinks too tonight or not. I have to see what the day brings with Mom & how long I last after being up before dawn. You all were so on target and I have to remember that people-pleasing me can still obsess unnecessarily, so I'll stay curious about that too.

I did go to tennis yesterday & boy did it feel good to hit that ball around! I ate 1/2 a banana before I went (suggested by my health coach) and it seemed to give me just enough more energy & I wasn't starving after, so ATF yesterday was AG -- all good.

I'm off to spin class this morning, will fill the day with errands & book work until mass at 5:15, and will see what else, if anything, comes up. But, first I know the way to start the day -- in prayer --

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

And, I'll pray, breathe, log, journal & express my way through this one day, and each one meal, moment, bite, thought & emotion. I'm so very grateful for each of caring you, my family & IRL friends, that my Mom is & stays ok, how good a workout makes me feel, and having the health & wealth to live this life I love! xoxox

Praying for your mom and hope she is doing well!

So glad all is on track for you. I know how stressful dealing with a parent when you can't be there is. Then "not knowing" what is going on causes the worst case scenarios to sneak in our thoughts!

Ruhu, what a stressful day, glad your mom is essentially ok. If her necklace is one she can wear in the shower she should. A high percentage of accidents happen in showers and bathtubs.

It sounds like you and the facility have some good things in place now that your mom is needing a bit more attention. So sorry for all the stress it caused, but you can look at it in a positive way too. That it brought VIVID attention to the need for some changes to keep your mom safe and happy.

Such a worry... And so scary. I am grateful that I didn't have that kind of worry... Although it was a shock, my mum died suddenly. I just hope I go that way to. The home sounds as if they care and are looking after her. Glad you got your tennis in... Nothing like slamming a ball around (not sure your opponent will appreciate it though lol). Help you get your frustrations and tension out. Look after yourself xxx

Aging parents can put a great strain on an already stressful life. It sounds like your mom is in good hands at the reitirment home, which should be a relief to you. I am praying for your continued success and the health of your mother.
