2ManyCurves's Journal, 09 March 2014

I finished yesterday at the exact goal I had set for myself. Again, not particularly fast, but sufficiently satisfying. 10K down. In retrospect, I think this was my first official 10K race.

Today is my regularly scheduled long run. Fifteen miles per Hal Higdon. I know it is not advisable to run long runs on back to back days. But, I really wanted to race in the 10K yesterday. And, Sunday is the only day when I can set aside enough time in my week to accomplish a long run (10 miles+). The other caveat is that I know I announced I'd go back to my official weigh in day of Monday. But, I've learned that my body weight is always heavier the day following a long run. As much as I know it in my head, when I step on the scale on Monday to inevitably see a 2-3 pound increase my heart sinks. The mental effect is so not worth it, especially when it is not an accurate measure when your muscles are inflamed. I don't know that I am too terribly tied to weighing on the scale anymore. Yes, I do enjoy seeing my weight go down. And it is a great tool for gauging success in healthy living. But, ya know what else is? Finishing a 15 mile run after a 10K. The scale is no longer my master. I will get to my goal weight. But it is going to take time and perseverance. I won't be there this Monday or even next Friday. Maybe if I just focus on what I need to do instead of where I am on the scale, it may help keep my mood up. I'm not claiming I will never feel that pull of curiosity (or worry) to jump on the scale. I'm just going to *try* to make it something that isn't so very important and urgent. I'm trying to put my OCD habits in check, even when FatSecret is blaring at me to "WEIGH IN NOW!"

'Nuff said. Time to strap on the running shoes.

You are insanely motivating to me, 2MC. I'm still working on being able to run a full 5k, and you are my inspiration. You're right, the scale does not own you, nor does that number dictate a success/failure on your part. All of this training is going to pay off, whether the scale likes it or not. Put it away and keep being awesome, which btw has nothing to do with the number. :-)

honestly why do we battle with the scale so much especially when we are smart women who know the reasons behind any increase! You are not alone so I am glad you have taken charge of your weigh ins and have set amazing goals You really are inspirational and I wish right now I could run (too many injuries) but you are amazing and I am very happy for you - congrats

You're do incredibly determined so have a great run. It sounds like you really know your body use it's messages and that is very important.

I admire you for running. I was a runner last spring/summer and had a hard time running a 5K. I was 25-35 lbs heavier than I am now, but running is hard for me at any weight. Kudos to you!

Hmmmm. Can you just walk for these races?

Awesome that you are running so much! Stop worrying so much about the scale numbers. Healthy and fit are what is most important the scale numbers will be nice to you if you keep up the healthy eating and exercise.

CR--- you can walk most races. Lots of people walk 5ks and 10ks. When you get into the higher miles (half and full marathons) you will be swept and unable to finish the race if you don't maintain a certain pace. With my long runs, I do still walk some. The majority of the time is spent running at a turtle-like pace, but I will walk from time to time if I feel a cramp or any other pain. I will walk for a minute or two until it dissipates and then get back into my turtle-like pace. All I care about is crossing the finish line without being swept and improving my own pace each time I run. There are tons of walkers who walk the entire race. It just feels so great to finish the miles regardless of how long it takes. Thank you all for the support. It's nice to log back in here after a run and read all the encouraging comments...esp. when I'm dealing with some bad chaffing now. I know, TMI!

Funny on the chafing comment. I can't run. One lousy knee and the other is a replacement. They refuse to coordinate to run. But a fast walk I think I could do. Thanks for the information. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, if I can get my endurance up walking them might be fun. I like classic have a knee issue and also ankles so low impact is good, high impact like running is not in the picture.

I totally understand what you said about the weigh-in reminder making you a slave to the scale. The reminder is supposed to help us, so if you find it isn't helping you, you need to do what you think is best for you. My regular weigh-in day is SUN. When I know I've cheated & that the weigh-in will only upset me I don't do it. Why set yourself up for more discouragement, when you already know what it will show & what you need to do about it? You're doing great, so just keep it up. You're a WINNER!

I think your amazing you have done so well with your weight loss, you have every right to snub the scales you don't need them, you are heading the right direction all the time. Yes I am sure that curiosity will get the better of you from time to time, but hey you're human! Although with all that running and weight loss I beginning to think your super human. Keep it up you're a total inspiration
