northernmusician's Journal, 03 March 2014

Yesterday was the second day of my bulk. I went a little nuts with the carbs and after a quick exchange of PMs with my buddy Dom, I believe I am back on track. I should have known better than to try and eat this way, at least at the outset, but it's all a learning experience. I'm cutting the carbs back and adding in the fats to make up the calories. Once summer comes, it will be a different deal. It will be all raspberries and huckleberries and other fruits. Yum. If I have to eat carbs, sign me up for the fruit table. Complex carbs from grains simply do not work for me. I love them, but they do not serve me well, or at least, I don't use them well. My weakness. Mine to get under control and finally use them to my benefit when I know they'll be necessary.

Looking outside this morning and looking at the fruit trees and reminding myself that I gave up all fruit last year. But not this year. I love my garden and trees. Surrounded by farms and freshness at it's peak. Gotta' get rid of the final lbs so I can enjoy the fruits of the earth.

Carbs like pasta and bread, while delicious going down, remind me of KFC - yummy in the moment, but I regret it later. Makes me tired, I feel bloated, seems to absorb water like a sponge and takes forever to get out of my system. Could be it's all in my head, but when I eat proteins and fruit, though I may not feel as full, I don't go into a food coma, and that's nice. Glad you're back on track, NM.

I have no doubt you'll find your balance. Berries are great because they are low glycemic fruits.

It's funny isn't it? Some people keep complex carbs in the forms of grain product and avoid fruit. Others keep fruit and avoid the complex carbs. I think what works for each person is very personal. I believe, since I'm a fruit guy (please don't take that the wrong way), that since fructose must be processed by the liver before it can go into the bloodstream it gives a more moderate insulin response. Not talking high fructose corn syrup here. Draglist! Shame on you! (Just a few hot peppers on my half please.)
