Johanne's Journal, 16 December 2010

Oh, too funny. I'm sitting here smelling the most delectable smells and thinking to myself, "I know my neighbor is at work." (She lives in the mother-in-law apartment on the end of my house and I can always smell what she cooks.) And then it hit me, I put on a crock pot full of Smoked Turkey and White Bean Cassoullet. It smells AMAZING! I guess I'd better go tend to it. LOL!

The great thing is, it tastes as good as it smells! I couldn't resist having a second supper last night when I had it all finished. This is definitely something I will be making again.

Cassoulet!? How cool! No one down here ever makes anything like that. Except for Mr Coco, who really gets into French cooking and cassoulet is one of his favorite things experiment with. He turns it into such a production. When we went to France a few years ago, he sought out an obscure shop in Southwest France that supposedly makes one of the best cassoulet pots. It was a neat adventure. The atelier was beside a canal in the most beautiful rural setting. And they had stacks and stacks of gorgeous earthenware. What's your recipe, Johanne?

Jo, you sound like me. lol Hubby will ahve somethingcooking and I will think "Wow, that smells great, we should should have that (thinking it is the neighbor, although they are 3 acres away)." The smells just seem to carry when it is cold outside, don't they? Another good thing about winter! lol Hope that you are having a great day and enjoying all the delectable smells! Coco, that sounds like a great adventure, shopping for earthenware in the south of France....jealous! lol

Coco, I don't have a Cassoullet dish, and I didn't do all the lovely prep work, like cooking fresh leeks, herbs and bacon in olive oil, etc. I just poured all the ingredients into my Crock Pot and put them on to stew. I left out the onions and leeks because I'm allergic to onions, and I left out the bacon and olive oil to save calories. I used dry herbs to save money. I'm sure my cassoullet is not what a true connoisseur would approve, but I think it's delicious. I put the recipe in my cookbook last night so I could get an accurate content count. And yes, Steph, I am jealous too. LOL. I would LOVE to go to France to get a real cassoullet pot. My doggy, Remi, really enjoyed the skin and gristle when I deboned the turkey, so it had added benefits. :-)

My neighbor just called and asked what I was cooking last night. She got home at 2:30 a.m. and the smells made her hungry. She said she almost called me. LOL!!!
