FullaBella's Journal, 11 July 2013

Have you ever shared an agenda with someone despite having a completely opposite goal? Eh, that's not accurate. It's sharing the goal despite the opposite agenda. Oh heck, let me just tell the story.

I just had the most interesting conversation with a 'prepper'; you know, those folks who are preparing to survive when disaster hits or the world falls apart? Underground shelters, water purifiers and freeze dried food. Don't bristle up at me if you're a prepper; I'm not mocking the process. I'm just amused at the comparisons recognized during our conversation.

There have been several posts and conversations on here about 'why are you losing weight' and more often than not, the answer is 'health and live longer.' What few people ever qualify is 'how much longer'. I actually think some folks believe they are moving one step closer to achieving immortality every time they refuse an Oreo. Far be it for me to be the one to disillusion them.

Regardless, preppers are quite the opposite. I'd seen some of the freeze dried food distributors at street fairs and their food is all about shelf-life and caloric density.

My friend the prepper has gained some weight in the past year. Again, don't bristle. I haven't grown so nosy or smug that I commented on it. HE commented on my loss and asked if I was sick. After clearing up that question he shared that he'd gained his weight on purpose. Along with continually stocking his shelter shelves, he was packing on the weight to be able to live through times when food becomes scarce. He feels this will give him the edge to live longer during a famine.

He shared that he belongs to a web site that in addition to tips and techniques for prepping breaks down which foods to stock and store. Food are rated; green beans are a no-no versus red beans. Though Calorie Count may give them an A+, on his website the green beans fail.

I started laughing and shared that I belonged to a website that does the opposite. To explain my laugh I confessed that we journal and brainstorm continuously about avoiding preservatives and choosing foods with reduced calorie, low fat and low carb from the ring of perishables for clean and fresh eating. That we do all sorts of complicated math computations of food versus energy and ways to get leaner. Again, with the agenda to be healthier and live longer.

To give you a visual, imagine the Sheriff in Smokey and the Bandit. My friend actually leaned over on my desk and said in his best southern drawl...

"Well, all I can tell ya missy is when the sh*t hits the fan, those skinny folks are gonna be in a heap of trouble."

The fact that he said 'those folks' instead of 'you folks' meant he didn't include me in the skinny group, LOL. Ah well. I guess it's not too late for me yet.

Have a good evening.

Heheh I love your posts :) Yeah I've heard of the Preppers. I've never had a chance to meet someone yet. They are the type of people that I can't decide whether they're considered "Pessemistic" or "Optimistic" - it sways on both sides of the line.

Well if the particular sh*t that hits the fan is the zombie apocalypse. I will live longer because I can out run those preppers :P.

Hahaha that is awesome. What an interesting way to look at things!! ;) I just don't know if I want to live longer through the end of the world.... If it's here, I want to go quick! Haha.. Other than that, I agree with Savaticus - as long as I can outrun half of the world, I'm totally prepped for the zombie apocalypse.. On the other hand, I don't know if it's about being the fastest or the smartest - saw a video on youtube today about an impala that eluded 2 cheetahs by jumping into the open window of a car full of tourists...!!!! So we can't plump up too much to prepare for disaster or we won't fit through the windows.. ;)

Skinny folks can run faster and hide in smaller places-watch The Walking Dead, poor Otis never stood a chance...

Thanks everyone - I thought it was just really interesting we were walking different paths toward the same goal. I agree it's hard to know if they're optimistic or pessimistic - I too have no desire to survive among zombies either. Have never seen Walking Dead for that same reason; I don't even rubber neck car wrecks but I have seen the impala video a couple of times, LOL.
