I AM SO TICKED OFF!!! I have been looking for a low TOTAL carb tortilla, so that the hubby and I could enjoy an occasional wrap. So I went to Kroger today, and in the aisle with the hispanic foods, I found some Xtreme Wellness low carb, high fiber tortillas. I read the label, and it stated that the TOTAL GRAMS of Carbs was 5, the dietary fiber is 12 grams, and 8 grams of protein. I read it over several times to make sure that I wasn't reading it wrong. Nope, 5 GRAMS TOTAL CARBS. So I came home and made the hubby and I a nice cheese and pastrami wrap for lunch. They were delicious. Then I decided to enter the info into my food diary. And this is where I started to steam. The tortillas weren't in the data base yet, so I keyed all the pertinent info into the appropriate spaces and hit enter. Then a little window popped up, that said, "you cannot have more fiber than carbs" or something inane like that. WHAT??? WHAT THE HECK??? So I opened a new window, and googled it. Turns out that in foreign countries, they already subtract the fiber for you! Well, isn't that special?? And this was all written ion English, with at least 8 US cities listed as the distributor, but they are manufatured somewhere else! The really intelligent thing to do, would be to list the carbs left as NET CARBS, not TOTAL CARBS. But then I wouldn't have bought them, and eaten them, now would I?

So for the first time since I started this journey, so many months ago, I cheated, and I didn't even get to eat naything that I would have chosen to cheat with. If I am going to have that many carbs, then I am going to eat REAL bread, like homemade yeast rolls! I went over on my carbs, and I am REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY TICKED OFF ABOUT IT!!! If I wanted to use 17 grams, of my daily allotment of 20 grams of carbs, on one kind of food, it sure as heck wouldn't be a flippen' tortilla!!!! GRRRRRR!!!!!!

Okay so I am done venting, and even though this will really mess up my plans to have a great BBQ dinner with my baby sis, I will survive. I just can't have the zucchini or the low carb bbq sauce, but I am going to eat 2 jalepeno poppers and 2 deviled eggs. I will have eaten almost 27 grams of TOTAL CARBS today, and only 12 grams of NET CARBS. This is really good....if you are counting net carbs, but for me it may well spell disaster. Guess we shall see what happens when I weigh.

Hope that everyone else's Sunday is going along swimmingly.

I would be ticked off too. It's not enough we have to read and calculate carbs in USA-ese, we also have to know how they do it in foreign countries that may export their items to the US????? I can well understand your frustration since I know you do total carbs due to your carb sensitivity. At least you've let the rest of us know (just like you did the sugar alcohols and hidden carbs) so we can be better prepared. I'll keep my fingers crossed that these carbs just slide right thru your system without detection! BTW, I've found Tam-X-ico's Lo-Carb Wheat Tortillas (9g total carbs - 4 g fiber) to be great tasting; better than The Tortilla Factory's products. Also Joseph's Oat Bran & Stone Ground Whole Wheat Pita Bread is tasty as well (10g total carbs - 5g fiber). The Joseph's product, which is a pita pocket, is available at Wal-Mart but does have 1g sugar. The Tam-X-ico's product is available on military base commissaries and perhaps other locations as well.

Stef, don't be so hard on yourself. You didn't know. I just wish people(manufacturers)would write stuff in plain english instead of covering up or doing the hidden things. I don't blame you for being upset, but you didn't know. As strict as you are with yourself, you will be right back on track tomorrow.:) It is done and over and you can't take it back now. IT'S OK. Tomorrow is another day.:):)

Sandy, thanks. I just cannot believe that there are 8 US cities listed on the package and yet the labeling, which is in English first, then Spanish uses foreign means of measuring something like carbs. And that is the only thing that is different! I will try to see if I can find those tortillas, but I really think I'll just use cheese from now on! lol

Thanks Laurie I know that this too shall pass, but dad gummit, I am so flippen careful, and then something like this trips me up!! But tomorrow is another day and although I cannot now enjoy all the bbq foods that I have prepared for us for dinner, I will still have the meat, the salad, 2 peppers, and 2 deviled eggs. Such is life. lol

Stef, I know how frustrating this is for ya especially since you just got yourself off a stall. Breath deeply, tomorrow is a new day. Maybe a little extra Si6 will take care of it! Have a great week!

girl... I bet you have a great loss on your next weigh in regardless.... Your bod said....whoa! the winter is over and let the good times roll!!! Don't sweat the petty stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff... that's what the coach always said!

You poor thing! How bizarre! And annoying! As far as I know we don't have fiber already removed from total carbs on our foods here. I always subtract the fiber from the carb total. When I have processed food that is... LOL Hugs to you - I hope you still enjoy the bbq!

It's not your fault so don't beat yourself up about it - plus, now you've opened everyone else's eyes to something I don't think anyone knew about. You are doing a fantastic job!

Flowerdude, I sure hope you are right! And I never pet the sweaty stuff! lol

Squiggs, I know, right? It is so against the way that I have always read labels and nutritional info, that I was just dumbstruck! Oh, well it'll be alrught! And yes I did enjoy the BBQ! I just ate a bit less and recorded it anyway! Carbs were up, but.....I'll survive!

Thanks, Shae. I am sure it will, it just really ticked me off!

Thanks, FAB!! I won't ever make that mistake again, that's for sure.

I don't blame you for being pissed about that. I would be, too! What is allowed by the FDA appalls me! It's one of my pet peeves. Whether it was manufactured elsewhere or not, as long as it's sold here, it ought to follow our guidelines. My problem is with what is ALLOWED. My special pet peeve (one of them!) is the whole trans fat issue. As long as it's under 1 gram, they don't have to list it. The thing is, even 5 grams a day has been shown to cause major problems in the long run. There are no "safe" levels of trans fats. So if you eat 6 or 7 things in a day that are listed as "0" trans fats, you could STILL be getting five grams! That really bugs me, especially since in this country, many, many people eat highly processed, packaged foods. Sure, they made a step in the right direction by having to list trans fats at all...let's take it that step further and give the REAL story on them! The other is the massive amounts of high fructose corn syrup in foods. AKA.. Satan! It's a crime how much is in most foods. Another one is the use of genetically modified food substances and no accountability as far as informing the public. Even with milk, it took quite a while to be able to even MENTION that the milk is rBST free - and they still have to ALSO say, there is no significant evidence to support that rBST treated cows are different than those not treated with rBST. Something to that effect. So I get your pain. I tell you, we need to shop armed with a computer so we can Google EVERYTHING. Or make it ourselves. Frustrating, to be sure!

RWL, I was just reading the label on my cream cheese that says "Our farmers pledge not to treat their cows with rbST. The FDA has determined there is no significant difference between milk from rbST treated cows and non-rbST treated cows." So in my mind, how the heck do we know that the dairy producer is telling us the truth about not useing rbST, if they believe the FDA? We don't! As for HFCS, I use NOTHING that has that in it! My DIL first brought the HFCS issue to out attention in her first year of Pharmacy School! They fully explored and studied the way that it is processed by the human body, and what effects it has. It is ridiculous what they will allow the food industry to feed us, all in the name of profit! As for the genetically modified foods, we haven't seen too much of that around here, as far as I know. I sure wish I ahd a portable computer. Guess I could have used my phone, but I never thought that the labeling would not read the way that I have been taught to read it! If they aren't going to require accurate and consistent labeling, then what the heck good does it do to read the darned labels??? We use very little processed foods anymore, thanks to our lifestyle change, but it sure would be nice if when we decided to, we could at least trust the flippen' labeling!

stef tortillas are a weakness for me and i would love to find some that were good enough for us total carb counters i used to make them from scratch and i am wondering if we could use soy flour and make our own? they are not too difficult to make but i have not used soy flour on anything yet i know that the flax that i have used is too course but just wondering if any one has tried to make some from scratch?

Oops, I stepped into a hot spot here. But you guys are right, what we read is NOT what we get. Everyone says "read the label", well if the damn label was accurate, we could! Just like the radiated fruit we are eating. Do they tell us it's radiated on the label? NO! And I read about the BS with the "cage free", "no hormones", "no antibiotics" crap too. They twist words terribly and call US uninformed. HA! Well you got me fired up too ~ LOL. Thanks for coming by to see me Stef. Have a marvelous day!

Rh, I don't like them well enough to do that. I may take the ones left and cut them into quarters and use them, but more than likely, the dogs will be eating mexican for a few days! lol
