I need to learn how to control my breathing while I run. Went running with my boyfriend after work last night and I surprised myself how far I can run. I discovered a secret which I believe was my problem...Spanx. I now (as of last night) wear a spank when I run. It holds all my extra skin in...which USED to bounce and literally bounce my clothes off of me and hurt my chest and back with the weight impact of the skin bouncing. I never could keep running because I would have to stop to pull my pants back up. But with a spank on and a sports bra, no problem. I believe I could run a mile solid! Only problem I have now is the breathing. I have to stop to catch up on my breath and will be breathing so hard it feels like my rib is stabbing my lung.

While running yesterday I looked down at my legs. It was so strange! I literally could see the muscles working under my skin and it made me feel really good about my progress. I feel healthier than I've ever felt. Two years ago I could have only IMAGINED myself running like that. Two years ago just walking the distance I ran yesterday would have had me out of breath and sweating worse than I did yesterday running it. My confidence level is out of the roof compared to what it used to be.

I have been tanning a lot lately too. I am tan and getting my muscles toned. I feel so good about myself. Not going to stop because the way it makes me feel about myself makes the effort and the sore muscles totally worth it.

Sarah this is awesome and I'm watching for the real runners comments on breathing for myself!! I've found that I breathe through my nose and keep deep and slow breathing to keep myslef going. I nkow just what you mean. I use to set a goal of this tree to that tree to run and could only do half of this small path, last weekend I found out I can run the whole thing and I won't collapse or die after. It's an amazing feeling!! I can't wait to have even more confidence like you do!! It's truly worthy when putting in the work!! LOL about muscle I can't believe the muscle that all the sudden just shows up!!! You are such an inspiration, keep going!!! :-) :-)

I love this entry! Congrats to you girl! If you can find a love for running, it's like no other cardio out there. Keep it up and the breathing will get easier. Like Orchiannie said, through the nose. Nasal passages are smaller than your wind pipe. Lessening the O2 flow to your heart making it slow down. I tell my clients when they are recovering they need to take as long of an inhale through their nose as possible. Your body will tell you when you need to exhale. It's difficult but practicing this will teach your body to recover quicker, increasing your endurance and stamina. Even when your running, inhale through the nose exhale through the mouth. And try to make it rhythmic. Don't be a mouth breather ;) I'm proud of you girl. Maybe training for a 5K is in your future? Keep it up!

Great work!! I agree with Cort - I try to use my foot strikes to time my breathing if I'm having trouble (like in for 3 steps, out for 3 steps) and adjust from there.. I also sometimes don't exhale enough and have too shallow of breathing, which leads me to sideaches. And don't discount the importance of practice! The more you get out there and run, the easier the breathing will be!! Keep it up! :)

I had that SAME PROBLEM when I would try running pre-tummy tuck. Tummy tuck enabled me to run 2 half marathons. That was worth it.

I used to wear 3 sports bras- spanx and running pants before my surgeries... i TOTTALLY feel your pain my friend! I had a breast reduction and tummy tuck a year ago... AMAZING I can run w only one bra and regular shorts or pants like any regular person. SO worth it. Ive signed up for a half marathon in October!
