Well today is 'my' Saturday and the next three days will be 'my' Sunday. I'm not normally one to mess with the calender but I checked with the Mayans and they agreed it would be okay in the wake of their big goober prediction last year. Storming here today - but I'm still at peace and feel happy.
Intuitive healthy eating is settling in and taking a really comfortable firm hold of me. Last night's dinner was another single skillet delight of jumbo shrimp, sun dried tomatoes, pesto sauce, spinach, artichokes and mushrooms. I was avoiding anything that required chopping.
Instinctively I am doing really well. I'm becoming the RainMan of the food diary as I complete the second half of my twelve month committment to mentally databasing the nutritional makeup of food. '327 calories... de de de definitely 327 calories...'
But moreover, I've grown very comfortable with 'how much do I really want to eat.' I have reached a point where I know that eating to 'overfull' will disappoint me as it robs me of the opportunity to enjoy the food I just ate.
Being preoccupied thinking about the pain in my stomach or pain in my soul regretting that I failed at mindful eating is no way to spend the evening.
In the past I'd have looked at the label and said 'oh, six jumbo shrimp is considered a serving, huh? For who? A small child? Heck, that doesn't even make a decent happy meal! Oh, it totals 60 calories only? Well then, I'll have 12 as I am sure I have room in my RDI for the 120 calories.'
Now I look at the over all dish and think 'hmm, as I've added all of this other stuff into the skillet it's really a lot of food to try to eat at one time. Don't. Save some for tomorrow.'
And surprisingly, as I savor the wonderful taste in my mouth I can remember it later. No rushing and brushing my teeth to clear the memory. No anxiety because I want to eat the rest. No hunger. Just satisfaction at the meal prepared and how it made me feel.
It starts making sense. A whole can of tomatoes is considered 3.5 servings when it's part of the makeup of a meal. It doesn't matter that the whole can is only 105 calories; I won't enjoy my meal if I eat too much of anything at one time.
It makes me angry with restaurants. If six shrimp is listed under 'starters' as an appetizer, naturally I'm going to think 'well, if that's the starter, a bigger portion of something should certainly follow to be the entree.'
No more, not today. Hopefully never ever again.
The reason for the Bella calendar customizing today is tomorrow is my birthday and I'm closing my business for my 'three Sunday's.' No big plans. I'm thinking a mani - pedi tomorrow morning. And maybe a massage (elsewhere) in the afternoon. Not ready to return to the texting yakker just yet.
I'll not likely have an ice cream cake nor any chocolate dipped strawberries delivered; I'm thinking the stepdaughter is still recovering from that Valentine fiasco. If she has and does I will handle it much more gracefully than I did then.
But I am considering, if my friend and I do spontaneously dine out, of having simply a dessert instead of the meal. I'm not sure yet. Predicting how I'll want to eat that far in advance is not mindful now, is it?
And in recognition of mindful eating and healing from addictions, I did make it to sleep last night sans the silly bedtime burrito fixation. Little by little.. day by day.
Thank you for reading. Have a wonderful day.
Bella

Hey I like that Banana's Foster suggestion too. lol so good. I also have to admit that I spend large parts of the days thinking about what I am going to eat. What can I say? I just love eating.

@Missy - thank you. I shall try :-) @Colly - from your mouth to God's ear, aye? @Jay - hmmm.. no where like that in my town but thank you for the suggestion @ Isabel - I phoned for an appt (massage) and am still waiting. Love the semantics! @Sharon - thank you ~ I am so grateful for days like today @ Cathy - I actually realized this morning I 'wasn't' already thinking about eating... it's a nice change for me. @ Bren - thank you too. I won't be able to get out of Dodge like SOME people I know but just a few things away from Bellawood will be nice @Lizzy - I do love it, the feeling. I'm not being smug but I do feel confident. You know, all in all, I would love a nice bowl of fresh strawberries and maybe some yogurt - it sounds really good to me right now and would be a wonderful metaphor for the birth of my new year of living. Thanks again everyone.

Yes, fresh strawberries and yogurt or! Great fresh start. I know that when I want a piece of cake or some dessert as a treat, I look, it up on FS before going to get it, and quickly rethink the damage:-)

Well said Bella - as usual - I can't wait to make your shrimp concoction because it sounds right up my alley. I think we share the same style taste buds. I have all the ingredients but the shrimp (the ones I have in the freezer are coconut fried). I am dining out tonight after helping friend with the church directory photo shoot and then again at same friend's house or a restaurant on Saturday. Your analogy has given me visuals for my two evenings out. Appetizer only - maybe. Or divide my dinner in two portions to save for later. Happy Birthday friend - and wishing you many more with your healthy lifestyle. Thanks for all you are to us

@Lizzy - well, I did indeed have the strawberries & yogurt; they were great @Erika - thank you and I did! @Angel - thank you my friend - yes, it's been a heck of a change and now I have 2 Sundays' remaining @ Sharon - thank you and it DID. Started out cloudy after storms but sun came out for a beautiful day @ SE - thank you! @Paula - thank you for the buddy request - yep, somedays it's one bite at a time but they are getting easier @Lizzy - you know, I can hear you singing! @ Neptune - thank you... coconut shrimp sounds good but you're right - not so much mixed IN with the rest but would be great on the side w/the rest in a different bowl. @ DK - thank you stranger - good tohear from you. Thanks again everyone. It was a fabulous day. I'm blessed to have you all as friends!
