BuffyBear's Journal, 15 April 2013

For two weeks in a row I have been unable to record my challenge progress. It accepts my weigh in but not my challenge updates. No one else seems to be having this problem. Oh well, not important in the big scheme of things.

Found out just how out of shape I have become over the winter. I needed to bring out a step ladder to climb into the back of DH's pick up - soooo embarrassing!

But I got the whole truck load of composted chicken manure spread onto the garden without further incident. Next weekend the veggies will get planted.

Love this time of year!

I always need help getting into a truck so don't feel bad! Hubby has a massive diesel farm truck and I'm a midget. If I can't step on the fender to get in then I'm not getting in. He looks at me wierd when I close the tailgate so I can step up. lol Sounds like you had a great weekend. I can't wait for things to dry up here to try my hand at gardening agian. Hope you have a great day!

Ruth - Thanks - I sure do hope so. We are supposed to go horse back riding. If my bum knee can't get me into the back of a truck, how is it suppose to get me on a horse?

Lizzy - It is called mushroom mulch and the garden supply sells it for $20 a scoop. DH has a fit that he has to pay money for sh*t!

DFW - Since the tail gate was open and covered with chicken poop the step ladder seemed like a better option - LOL.

I got a few zucchini plants in this week. We've got some tomatoes and peas and some other plants in pots on the back deck. If I can keep the squirrels out this year I may have some food. Mine is a raised planter, so there isn't much exersize required. Have to do something else for that. My neighbors have horses so I got some of that and put ground egg shells on it, too. What are you planting this year? Good luck with it.

dboza - I am jealous - I'd love raised beds but DH has this big roto-tiller, so I'm stuck. I only plant things that the deer and rabbits won't eat (tomatoes, peppers, green beans and squash).

Buffy, that mushroom stuff is fantastic! I used it when we had to do all the intial plantings around our pool (different place). Those plants LOVED the stuff! When I went back to get more, I never could find it again. :( Don't worry about using a ladder....better that than really injuring your knee. I've got yardwork to do too, but nothing so rewarding as planting veggies....enjoy!

Can't wait to put stuff in the ground, I've had my seeds sprouting inside for months, they are ready to go!! I'm amazed... your deer don't eat tomatoes?? Mine do-- last year DH and I came home to find a deer in the middle of our garden munching down on them. He ate them all!! So so sad. This year we're building a fence to keep them out.

Buffy - NC deer must be different than the ones we have in CT. They ate my tomatoes last year. Not all the way to the ground but capped them pretty good. I will not do a lot of gardening, don't have the time for it, will not take the time for it but a few things I would like to have. Had put m y tomatoes in a cage last year but then for some reason left the top off and here they went. Will give it another try again. Now squash, is that different than zucchini? I still try to figure all the different plant out over here *lol* Will the chipmunks not go for it?

Sandy - 10 years ago we had hard red soil that dried up like a brick. It now actually resembles black loam. What a difference!

Shadow and Jozette - Don't know what to tell you because I have never had deer bother my tomatoes. Of course, we won't talk about the year I was stupid enough to try planting corn - LOL.
