Last Wednesday it was sunny and +16C and today its -20 with the wind chill and snowing. Just when I thought spring was coming, winter comes back. No walks today. No matter how much I get bundled up that wind chills me to the core.

Today is a good day to make some stock. I find that to make a good soup or stew you need a good stock. I'm finally officially sick of chicken, had it at least once a day for almost a week. That big old Hutterite bird is hard for one person to eat it all. One breast is going into the freezer. Time to take that carcass, throw into the pressure cooker with some onion, celery and carrots and cook all the flavour out of it.

I'm also running low on my curry lentil soup. So once the chicken stock is done I'm going to make the stock for the soup. For that one I take a couple of smoked pork hocks and the usual trio of onion, carrot and celery. Cook it in the pressure cooker until everything just falls apart, two to three hours. I put ham in the soup so the smoked pork hock makes a good base for it.

Once the stock is done I strain it and cool it overnight and then skim the fat off.

Tommorrow I'm going to help my cooking buddy make some pyrizhky. This is something my Mom use to make and I got the recipe from her. I showed my buddy how to make them and she has been hooked on them ever since. They are rather high in calories and really yummy so I'm not making any for myself. Don't need that temptation in the house. Basically it a rich bread dough wrapped around a ground beef filling. Its like a bun with this wonderful savory filling.

This cold nasty weather is good for cooking.

Those pyrizhky's look delish! I would slather butter on them if I had them, Im a sucker for bread. Sorry about the cold, the weather has finally turned nice here, I will blow some your way. I love fresh stock, don't know why I haven't done it. I bought the sodium free stuff in the carton and it basically sucks. Time to get cooking. Stay warm and have fun cooking. Hope a litte wine goes with the event :-)

Wow all sounds yummy...sure wish my DH would eat soup..he is a meat and potatoes guy....Cold days makes you want to cook even for a hate to cook person like my self..Have a great day...:O)..Oh mamma and calf are doing great...:O)

I'm going to have to try your lentil soup recipe- I love curry lentil soup. We put a spoon full of mashed up sweet potato in ours when we serve it. And the Prizhkys- sounds like my kind high carb day food, I'm putting that on my list too.

Your soup and cooking stock sound so good! Our weather is going nuts too. It's been 26 degrees then 76 degrees and calling for snow tomorrow but its raining today and 43 degrees now. Nutty weather.! I have been a naughty buddy too. I joined WW's and did okay for the first couple of months but this is month 3 and I quit caring to count points. It's a lot of trouble. LOL! I have to just stop eating so much. HA HA! Glad you got the house and yard all tidy. That is my next chore once we finish the bathroom remodel. HUGS!

Pyrizhky is very popular dish here in Russia. Most popular fillings are meat, potatoes with fried onion, cabbage with eggs or sweet fillings like apples with cinnamon. We roast pyrizhky or fry. It is yummy but very rich in calories.

Hey FOL! Is it still snowing there? We are getting a bunch of snow today. I didn't think we were supposed to get any until tomorrow. LOL! SPRING has SPRUNG a leak I think. Hugs!

No snow for the past couple of days but the temperature has dropped down the -20C. Feels more like January than March.
