FullaBella's Journal, 26 February 2013

I had to share another 'voices in the head' segment ~ but will keep it short this time. This one had to do with the argument they had when I was trying to convince myself to try 'juicing' - and just in case that's also some weirdo slang, I'm referring to making vegetable smoothies to replace all of the supplements I'm taking.

I'd started by purchasing one of those Odwalla superdrinks in the store. I knew it was 99% fruit so that made it sugar (37g in one drink actually!!) but the 'kale' gave it a 'green color' that made my voices argue.

So Sunday morning the conversation was:

'Ugh... it's green!'
"So? Just because those sneaky food companies with a hidden agenda to keep us addicted to sugar have us fooled into thinking all juice should be orange, yellow or red doesn't mean it won't be good."

'But ... green? It'll probably taste like a mowed lawn!'
"How do you know?"

'Huh?'
"How do you know that's green means grass?"

'Well, doesn't it?'
"Uh... let's think... Margarita's... Key lime pie... Jello shots.... Pistachio ice cream....granny smith apples... I sure don't remember you backing up and curling your nose at those..."

Sigh... 'Okay.. you can hush now.... here goes...'

Result: it was pretty darn sweet, a little too sweet actually, and not a hint of mowed lawn and I enjoyed it. For the two hours that followed I was the energizer bunny on crack because I changed the bed linens, completely washing and refolding them, mowed and weeded the back yard, cleaned up and organized all my lower cabinets in the kitchen and bathed the dog!

When it wore off, I crashed and sank like the Titanic. Hence, am SOO excited my processor came in today because I have a fridge full of fresh produce to try out tonight! I even bought horseradish root and ginger root although I have no idea how to process those! But I'm about to learn.

Thanks for stopping by :-)

Watch out for that horseradish. It is very hot when its fresh and you don't want to be touching your eyes when peeling or working with it. I'm interestsed to find out what kind of juice you make with it.

I could use some of that Odwalla super juice right about now! I've never heard of that one before but my daughter makes green smoothies with banana and spinach (she adds other stuff like almond milk and maple syrup, not sure what else) but she just uses a blender. I have sometimes been tempted to buy a juicer. I look forward to hearing about your experience in the juicing world. Maybe it will sway my decision.

Thanks for the tip Lady - I wouldn't have thought about that. I'm starting with a couple from the Reboot site: 'Pucker up Parsley' and one of the ingredients is the horseradish and one called 'Juicy V9' with ginger. I'd copy/paste the recipes here but I'm not sure about copyrights. However, I did not get a juicer, I got a cuisinart that is supposed to chop and blend anything so I'm going more for the whole vegetable in my 'drink'. I kept looking at a Nurtribullet but one is supposed to do the same ~~ here's hoping :-) I'm excited.

@Bren - thanks. I'm disappointed - machine worked ok but I guess winging it was a bit ambitious - my first drink did taste like grass and second not do much better. Will try to be more accurate with recipes tomorrow.

the good thing about green smoothies is all the fantastic nutrition and water to make you full. The bad thing is sometimes they taste like medicine. :P Fruit helps, if you don't overdo it. My Hubs loves his "Shrek Juice": tons of anything green like parsley, celery, kale, spinach, romaine etc., with half a peeled lime and a little piece of fresh ginger. He says it gives him tons of energy. I think it's vile but then I hate ginger. I'd rather eat 10 salads than drink it! Good luck, I really hope you find some that you like.

@Teri - I love ginger, even bought it in root form but then I read the instructions on processing it and got a little overwhelmed. ((Not a chef at all!)) That drink sounds good - does he use root or pickled ginger?

I only make DH fruit smoothies with whey protein now. Berries, banana, pineapple and flax seed in the blender. This last blender is a real pill though. It wiggles and smells like it is on fire after a few minutes. I would really like to buy the Vitamix 5200 but at $450 it is not on the priority list but hear it is excellent. I think once you find the ingredients that you need and love you will be good to go. I went to B,B & Beyond and bought 3 large cups by Blender Bottle with tight lids with drinking spouts. I blend a whole blender full of his smoothie, pour in the individual cups and freeze all. In the mornings he just nukes one for 30-60 secs (not sure) and stirs with a long cocktail stirrer and drinks on his way to work. I bought 6 million straws at a wholesaler online because it was the only place to buy extra long straws to fit in the 20 oz cup. Hope this helps a little. I want to do the same thing with veggies. I hear that blueberries kill the taste of spinach.

He uses root ginger. I peel it & slice it up a little b4 I put it in the blender. If I forget to buy some he will use powdered ginger instead. The pickled ginger is just for sushi round here. Don't be overwhelmed. What's the worst that can happen? Nothing too terrible I'm sure. :)
