ZippyDani's Journal, 12 February 2013

Good workouts two days in a row, and the soreness is already subsiding. Must be all these vitamins and good food I'm pumping into my bod. We found an amazing rowing machine that we're in love with and will continue to use. We both feel a difference in our back and shoulders, and I can already tell a difference in my posture. That's a HUGE accomplishment for me, I have always had terrible posture. But I'm working on that.

Yesterday I only had one bit of coffee, a SBUX canned double shot with energy. Drank it around 2:30 pm, gave me a boost to finish up work, and to get me to and thru our workout. Aside from that, it was nothing but green and herbal teas, and water water water. I even drank more than the standard 64 oz. I have 2 water bottles, one that is just under 24 oz and one that is a litre, or 33 oz. I drank 2 of the litre sized bottles full and maybe half of the 24 oz. My loss overnight wasn't quite what I wanted to see, but at least it was a loss. I'll happily accept it.

Today is Mardi Gras, which means tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, and the start of Lent. For us catholics, it has typically meant 'giving up' something. As kids, it was usually candy or soda or the like. Whatever thing we wanted the most. As you get older, giving up that sort of thing seems like a cop out. It's TOO childlike. I have given up coffee in years past, and it's TOUGH. But somehow it doesn't seem like it's enough for me as a grown person. Giving up candy isn't realistic as it was 15 years ago. Besides, it's not about giving up vices such as those, it's about sacrifice. Not necessarily edible sacrifice. Being part of THIS webpage, I'm already well versed in sacrificing edible things. I read about an idea for lent online, 40 bags in 40 days. Basically, not just sacrificing, but purging your life of unneeded things. Decluttering, donating, more like cleaning up your home and life together. Which I am ALL for. Even hubby said he would be open to that. It's tough in this house for the things like Lent. Technically, he is catholic by his baptism, but that and our marriage in a catholic church are the only things he's participated in. He wasn't raised in a church going household, like I was, and when they did go to church, it was to different places. His parents were going to join the mormon church, but when they tried to force it on their son, they said "nope, forget that" and then stopped going again. His parents were definitely raised catholic, but FIL had a run in when he was an older teen in Mexico, over a burial plot for an infant, and left the faith. I can understand that, but I also understand that he's a very stubborn person, and not too open to reason. Once his mind is made up, it's almost impossible to change it. My iron will has clashed with both his and MIL from time to time over the course of 21 years, and if it has to do with my girls, then I win. I had to say to him only once "Are YOU her mother?" and never had any trouble with him after that. My faith has always remained in my heart, even when faced with religious "naysayers" (for lack of a better term) or people who refuse to look beyond their own religion's doctrines of faith. I am catholic, even if some of my thoughts and ideas might not be in line with their teachings or preachings. That's for me and God to sort out in the end, not for some Church Lady to judge me for. I think because of that and other things, it's been hard for me to get back to the traditions of my religion, such as Sunday Church EVERY week. I'm about to 'move' to a church closer to home, then starting with the next school year, both girls will be enrolled in their verion of Sunday School. Unsure if it will be on Sunday or during the week. Hopefully I can put Teen in a weekend class. She has ENOUGH trouble getting her HW all done without midweek church.

Ok, enough rambling... I got things to do!!

Your forty bags in forty days is a wonderful idea. I agree that giving up is not always the best way to sacrifice. I have a plan for the "Giving it up" challenge but my real Lent offering is explained in my journal entry today. Happy Mardi Gras back to you.
