kschn's Journal, 24 January 2013

Only 5.6 pounds down from the beginning of January, but finally feel like I'm in the right state of mind for weight loss. It's hard to explain... I've done crash type diets, I've done the Atkins plan more times than I care to count and I've tried calorie counting, and the one plan that has worked for me (and STAYED off... that's the big difference) is calorie counting.

I've had big success with the Atkins diet (I was about 186 to about 158 on it but after I stopped it all came right back on, and more!!), and I have found that Atkins is just too hard for me to maintain, especially when on a major budget (cheese and meat tend to be quite expensive!) and with social events.

So for now I am sticking with the calorie counting. It's coming off SLOW (probably the slowest I've ever had it come off... most likely having to do with the fact that I am not very active right now with the lack of employment and the COLD) but I am finally in the right mindset. It seems other times I would try this, I'd be in sort of a rush rush rush feeling, or so easily fall right off track, but this time feels different. Every pound, every ounce lost is a milestone, an achievement, and I just have to keep remembering that.

It has been my experience that the slower you lose it the longer you keep it off. I have tried all kinds of diets from low fat to no carb and they work but for most people they are impossible to stick with. Calorie counting can be done pretty easily.

The more you diet, the more you learn about yourself and weight loss. Losing more slowly gives you time to adjust to a new way of eating and allows your body time to adjust. No matter what diet you do, it has to be sustainable for life and allow you some flexibility to live your life too. Sounds like your doing great!

Slow IS the way to go! I have dieted on and off for 40 years, gaining and losing the same weight over and over. I stopped dieting and stayed at a heavy, but stable weight range for almost 20 years. Recently, I lost 6 pounds in 12 weeks...the best part was it stayed off! Slowly more of the weight started to come off as I exercised more and ate what my body was telling me I wanted. I like calorie counting too, because you have the freedom to choose and budget your calories! This past holiday season was the first year I did not gain a single pound...I did not deprive myself of anything therefore, I did not binge and gain.

I think slow is definitely good. i worry I'm losing weight too fast and when it's off I'll put it back on too easily. However, if you are looking for a way to combine ideas, I've been doing no carbs after 4pm (only starch type carbs, I still eat beans, fruit etc). I find it works well and it's something I should be able to maintain full-time. I still get the carbs I enjoy I just eat them during the day. Keep yourself in that losing weight frame of mind. Good luck
