wichitaks's Journal, 18 December 2012

It has been a rough day.
Woke up with a horrible headache and sore neck
My scale shows I am 3 lbs up.
Was on the phone with insurance for hours today. Had to take my car to the insurance company to get an estimate and a check
Then took my car to the body shop so they could order parts. Their estimate is higher than insurance so I get to start with that fight.
Got a call from the dr. My cholesterol is still high even after complete diet change and exercise and everything. I was on pravastatin in may and June and had quite a few side effects. Lots of muscle pain and headaches so I stopped taking it with my dr advice. When the nurse called she said she wants me to go back on it. Even with all the side effects the nurse said that it was worth the side effects and the doc wants me to take it anyway. I am torn on what to do. Obviously the last 6 months has lowered my cholesterol but not by much so I need to do something.
The side effects are bad but the potential effects if I get pregnant while on it is much worse. Depending on dosage if I was on a high dose and became pregnant they say that I should talk with the dr about continuing the pregnancy. If I am on a lower dose. Which I am sure I would be on if I become pregnant side effects are likely. I am not on birth control anymore so pregnancy although not trying would be a possibility.

I am looking at foods to avoid
For diabetes. Sugars, fruits, carbs,
For blood pressure salts processed foods, canned soups, tomato sauce. Oils/fats
For cholesterol. Red meats, pork, eggs, dairy, lobster

I am supposed to avoid oatmeal for my diabetes BUT eat it to lower cholesterol. I am supposed to stop using oil to loose weight. But use olive oil to help increase my hdl,
I am left with baked broiled or grilled chicken
Fish but no more than two servings per week baked grilled or broiled.
Veggies baked steamed but not roasted since you use olive oil.
Fruits only one serving max per day

I am taking this hard. I really thought with diet changes and exercise etc that I would have reduced my cholesterol more than I have. But looks like I am not doing good enough so I have to take a medication that is powerful enough to cause sever birth defects if I get pregnant. I am not sure that I want to put that in my body. But what is worse??? High cholesterol or putting this in my body with the severe muscle pain and headaches that went with it and other potential side effects. I also have to be off the medicine for 6 months before I try to get pregnant or there is still a chance of birth defects if I get pregnant within those 6 months.

That sounds so tough, I really feel for you. Please don't feel that its a personal failing not to have got your cholesterol down, the doctor told my dad that more often than not someone can do everything right and it just doesn't respond. But I know that doesn't make it any easier to deal with the frustration or the consequences and the worries about the medication. And that sucks that your different dietary needs contradict each other like that. Best of luck and really hope your week starts looking up soon. You can still be really proud of everything you've done and the fact that you're meeting these problems fighting.

Hi there, excuse me for just intruding onto your journal, but I couldn't help but reading it. I used to eat a lot of processed foods. I was never really that overweight, but I wasn't well either. It took a long time to change my eating habits & prepare everything from scratch, but its been well worth the effort. Well now its not an effort anymore, its just what I do. You might want to change your olive oil for coconut nut. It has a lot of health benefits. You can do this, just take one day at a time :)

I have had to take cholesterol meds for some time now. If you're having so many side effects for this particular med, talk to your doctor about changing meds. There are lots of different cholesterol meds, maybe a different one would have less side effects for you. Try not to be discouraged, every little healthy change you make, makes a big difference!

The dr. said that if I have a reaction to one statin there is a much higher chance that I will have a reaction with another statin because they all work the same way and since it was the muscle pain and headaches that I was getting she said i will probably have them with all of the ones

Sounds like the doctor is just being lazy. If I were you, I would get another opinion.
