BuffyBear's Journal, 04 December 2012

For those of you who asked for a review of yesterday's Dr. Oz show: The guest was author Dr. William Davis who presented a quick synopsis of his book (Wheat Belly).

Dr. Oz did independent testing: 3 out of 5 woman had a greater blood sugar increase from eating whole wheat bread than from eating a candy bar (type of candy bar not mentioned).

I really appreciated that Dr. Davis stressed that when giving up wheat one should eat "real food". Also, he advised we should avoid most "gluten free" products because these are made up of unhealthy junk starches. This I had suspected but was nice to have that clarified.

I've heard great things about ezekiel breads-"Even though it is made with sprouted grains and has a low glycemic level this bread is soft and does not taste like cardboard. The bread packaging ranks 36 on the glycemic index which is a useful tool to gauge how different foods affect blood sugar levels. It 's also makes a pretty good tasting, wonderful toast and the combination of grains makes for a good balance of amino acids to provide a complete protein as well. In fact, it contains all 9 nine essential amino acids is low in fat, has no trans fats or cholesterol and is relatively low in sodium." I think it's pretty good and have a slice every so often. Thanks for the Dr. Oz recap!

Oh my goodness...every time we think we are doing good - like changing from white to whole wheat - turns out it's not great either! What are the alternatives, that aren't full of rubbish?

Newmooney - Reviewing TV programs is not my specialty - LOL.

Lindsay - Thanks for that! I need to investigate the other grains. One can only do so much flax seed!

Tracy - his point was that even though whole wheat bread is better than white, wheat itself is just not a healthy food. Have you read Wheat Belly yet?

PS - to Linsay - nice to know you are still speaking to me after the comment I made on your Journal yesterday - LOL.

I haven't read it - must do. But I will admit that I try to avoid eating wheat everyday as I know it causes major bloat with me and slows down my whole digestive system...probably TMI lol :)

lol Buffy I am sure Lindsay appreciated the kick :)

Tracy - all info processed here without prejudice! BTW - I have only leafed through the book but my Sister preaches from it so I guess I feel like I've read it!

lol Buffy - so true! I must admit it takes a hell of a lot to offend me....I guess that is why I tend to say it as I see it as I don't mind if people do it in return...

I want to read Wheat Belly but in the last 3 months I have ordered 3 books that I just have to read - I read the first couple of chapters - find what I am looking for and then the books just collect dust. I hate dust. My take on the Wheat is we aren't supposed to eat it because it isn't the wheat of our ancestors. I didn't buy Wheat Belly but I bought the Sugar belly one and didn't even get to start the first chapter yet - but figure sugar is off my menu now too. Except the very holy sugar that they use to make my Ghiradelli salt soiree dark chocolate. :) Seriously - Primal says "no" to soy lethichin (sp?) that they put in dark choc. I have bought all of the no soy L. dk. choc. I can find and they all are too "pure" for me. So I'm back to my Ghiradelli.

Neptune - Interesting observations! I did go on line and read a critique of Dr. Davis' book. They offered proof that even the primitive wheat is bad and other grains have the same addictive quality. But I agree with you - just don't eat it!

Bren - You know your body and what you can and cannot eat. Maybe I'd be better off listening to my body - just as long as it wasn't calling for brownies!

I am completely on board with the concept of avoiding the refined wheat.gluten.starch in my diet - it sets me up to crave like crazy; and I do not lose weight at all if I eat the stuff.

Yes, Buffy, gluten free processed foods are ridiculously high glycemic, but gluten free whole foods are not. I've seen that wheat belly stuff on the Dr. Oz website. He does provide great info, doesn't he. Have a great day.
