I have been trying to run 5 miles per day while eating the same diet in with which I was losing weight.
The more I exercise the more my weight increases...
I am
1)eating larger portions because I am hungrier?
2)my body is retaining more of what I eat?
3)I am increasing muscle weight?

177.6 lb Lost so far: 0 lb.    Still to go: 12.6 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

You are most likely increasing muscle weight, you may want to try increasing your protein some - I know it sounds crazy, but sometimes the body will tell us that it's starving, even though we think we aren't. I made that mistake myself - gained 25 lbs - mostly muscle, but I kept trying to eat less also so my body was just keeping everything and I wasn't burning the fat anymore.

When you change or start a new exercise program, your muscles retain water to help them heal. They get little tears in the fibers. Google "why the scale lies" for insight in to water weight gain. When your muscles get used to the increase, it will go away. I can go on a long bike ride and be up 4 pounds the next day . Also, when you increase exercise, your body might be telling you it wants more fuel. Adding protein to keep you satiated might help. Unless your lifting a lot of weights, it's difficult to put on too much muscle weight. You do build some running, but it will take months before it shows on the scale. You lose weight in the kitchen and get fit in the gym. You want to lose weight, you need to find the right caloric intake for you.
