Djburney's Journal, 31 October 2012

I passed up everything I shouldn't eat at the conference, not one bite of dessert or pasta or bread, so I was hoping to be rewarded on that! It just doesn't work that way, does it? The loss will show up, just not this morning.

This morning I was talking to a friend who has lost 15 pounds since I saw him in Oregon last month. Men lose so fast! But he was telling me the reasons he wants to lose weight. They were simple...he wants to be able to bend over and easily tie his shoes, he wants to wear boxers without the waistband flipping over...and bigger ones...he's an older dad and wants to be active and healthy with his kids. I've said it before, but I think this is the key to staying on our diets and exercise and finally maintenance. We have to be clear about WHY we want to do this, and remind ourselves frequently of the reasons. And not just "I want to wear a size 8." Why do I want to wear a size 8? Of what benefit will that be to me?

So here are some of my reasons:
-In the professional world, thinner people get more respect (not fair, but true. Candy Crowley and Oprah are the exception, not the rule)
-I enjoy pretty clothes, don't want to be limited to ones that cover up fat
-My knees and feet feel so much better when I am lighter and eat food that doesn't cause inflammation
-I want high energy levels
-My cholesterol and blood pressure and even my resting pulse numbers are normal when I'm eating better and losing weight
-I want to attract a man who has the same health goals as me, and ultimately have a healthy old age with him.
-I want to enjoy, without pain and struggle, activities that require physical exertion. Hiking uphill, not just level trails, riding my bike long distances, dancing for hours, playing with future grandchildren, waterskiing, volleyball on the beach

I guess I'd better think about stepping up the exercise soon. It's been on my mind. What are your reasons?

good reasons! some of them are my own as well. i think whatever reason motivates you, is a good enough reason. don't let others make you think your reasons are superficial, insignificant, silly or pathetic.

Thanks for posting this, it is great advice. One of my reasons to lose weight is to delight my husband. This man loves me no matter what and married me when I was not thin but I know that the better I look, he notices and appreciates it. I have more energy to reciprocate his interest in me, also.

Jess, I couldn't agree more about staying true to yourself and what motivates YOU. It takes a lot of honesty and introspection to figure out why you really want to lose it, and you are the only one who can do that for yourself. Excellent! Erin, what a sweet wife you are...I can see the difference between what you are saying, and a person who wants to lose weight because someone else wants them to. I hope the two of you grow old and healthy and happy together. I thought about you, Erin, when I was hiking today. Lets try to do it together on a Saturday morning soon.

Great post - read the comments so I'm just gonna say it. Yes, I am losing weight to feel better. That is my number one reason hands down. BUT - I do also want to look better;) My sweet hubby is the same - gain or lose he says nothing but kind words, he's a champ! I want to look better for me, just me. However the more weight I lose . . . The older I'm starting to look!! I can't decide if that's a good thing . . . : /
