Eat More Chocolate, Lower BMI?

Here's a quote from the New York Times:
Quote:
"A new study shows that people who eat chocolate frequently have lower body mass indexes than those who eat it less often. The researchers could not explain precisely why something usually loaded with sugar, fat and calories would have a beneficial effect on weight. But they suspect that antioxidants and other compounds in chocolate may deliver a metabolic boost that can offset its caloric downside."

HCB mentioned serotonin in her journal the other day. Could there be a link?

Wish I had stopped reading after the second paragraph. I was all set to log my daily exercise as running down to the store and running back home with a five-pound box of chocolate... for extra exercise maybe even a ten-pound box!

The article goes on to say:
Quote:
"It’s not the case that eating the largest amount of chocolate is beneficial; it’s that eating it more often was favorable,” Dr. Golomb said. “If you eat 10 pounds of chocolate a day, that’s not going to be a favorable thing."

Sigh. I guess I'll have to stick with my dark chocolate-covered cocoa nibs from Trader Joe's at 1 calorie per nib.

Good article! Years ago I listened when Ellie Kreiger the healthy chef said it was beneficial to eat dark chocolate every day - about the width of 2 fingers. That is about 2 sections from a Ghiradelli dark choc. bar. It makes me very happy! Now we have more proof! Yeah, thanks!

just a little humour for you... I know if I sat down and ate 10lbs of chocolate that I would not gain very much weight from it.. because I would be burning all those extra calories off running back and forth to the bathroom... lol.. :D

Did they specify what type of chocolate? I've read on multiple occasions that dark chocolate (80% and above)is more beneficial and has less sugars/carbs. Ya, it may not be as sweet as regular milk chocolate (mmmm to the effin hmmm!), but just like beer, it's an acquired taste :)
