My average heart rate on the treadmill was 155. I jogged at 5 mph for 15 mins n walked at 4.2 mph: both at 3% incline. Should my heart rate be higher or is it normal? Also I'm 22 5'6 n weight around 138 and my BMI is 22ish. What is a healthy BMI? I just want to make sure I'm doing this the right way. Thx :)

I'm older, taller, and heavier. When I really exert myself my heartrate is in the mid 160s. An easy pace for me is still in the 140s. There is a couple formulas that take 220 minus you age. That is your maximum heartrate. Depending on your goals you'll want to be at 70%-85% of your maximum. 139-168 bpm. You're good.

oh, and the 'normal' range of BMI they want you to have is 18.5-25. You're sitting fine there. Something perhaps more important is body fat percentage. That's tougher to just estimate without tools, and more measurements.

I know, I feel like there is no RIGHT way to determine either of these things. I know the formula you are talking about for heart rate and when I calculated it, it was some crazy high number like around 200 or something. At 185, I feel like I could die so I stay around 160 most of the time.

i swear i can't even sit at my desk typing without my heart rate above 155! So good for you. Mine is around 180 when I run. But what Jess says is what I've read, having your heart rate below the max is supposed to be good for developing your running/endurance.
