Day 210- What a difference a few oz make! I am talking about my running shoes, not my weight. (Warning: I get kind of runner geek for the next paragraph) I went and got fitted a new pair of running shoes on Friday and just as I thought just by luck I was already running in a pair of shoes that were ‘proper’ for me (Saucony Kinvara 2s). The only issue is these shoes are very light and there are not many others out there as light as they are. I also wanted my next shoes to have little more cushion and more of a ‘trainer’ type. So I ended up with a pair of Brooks Launch’s (again after I buy them I find out they are discontinued). So far I like them, they have different pitch than the Kinvara’s, I think 4mm vs. 10mm? So I expected some running muscle pain from the adjustment of how my foot is hitting the ground. And this morning there was that adjustment pain as I ran 3.5 mi in them for the first time. What I was scared of and knew was going to happen did, the extra weight of these shoes wore me out! The 4-5 extra oz on each foot had my legs work harder every step x how many steps in 3.5mi? We are talking a lot of lbs here! I am not saying it is a bad thing, it is a great workout for my legs and the burn felt good. But the question comes up: Do I run my races in the Brooks or the Kinvaras? The light weight of the Kinvaras will be sure to speed up my time, but will the pitch change tear up my legs? I am running another race this Sat. I think I train all week in the Brooks and run the race in the Kinvaras, what do I have to lose except for pain? I don’t see an injury as I do not have one today. This new class of minimalist running shoes has a lot of unanswered questions, even by the professionals out there. The nice young lady that helped fit me was a very seasoned runner/sales person and she admitted that she and her co-horts really get confused by these types of shoes because some rules don’t apply. Silly me went out and bought a pair because of an add in my Men’s Health mag, the great reviews online and I walked into a store that had them more than 50% off. Enough about my shoes.

BTW, the LRS prices were better than Dick’s and Sports Authority on shoes and cloths! They were about the same as Amazon. So don’t think you are going to pay more for a smaller store where you get better service.

The wife went with me to the running store and as I predicted after seeing me go through the fitting she wanted to get fitted also. So she also ended up with a pair of Brooks in more of a stability type. She kept telling me the rest f the day, ‘I never new running shoes could feel that good’. Hers ended up costing more than mine, lol. So she quickly picked up a few pairs of running shorts and a shirt and she is becoming a runner. I try not to give her too much advice as I know she has to figure it out on her own, but I hope she has some realistic expectations. I don’t want her to hurt herself because she is trying to keep up with me, I have been running much longer. Another fear of her rushing to get up to my level is, I don’t want to hate it because it does not come easy. As a society in general we have the ‘gotta have it right now’ mentality and we walk away if we can’t. I am happy for her and can’t wait till we are running races together. My son leaves for school tomorrow, so I need another race partner!

I really need to log my food better and I need to journal about what I am doing with food. What I can tell you briefly is we have cut wheat products out of our diet. Yes, there are sometimes and some items you can not avoid wheat, but overall we have seen a difference in our house with less wheat. I have a lot to say on this subject, but it will have to wait………

Relax and enjoy, Do what you like, Like what you do.

I do know what you mean! With the technology available there is no reason why all shoes can't be as light as a feather. Good move on cutting back on the wheat. Tip - when eating out most places serve wraps. It is a small serving of wheat, holds your meal together and no need to finish eating the wrapper when done.

Great way to sneaky influence your spouse into running! LOL - she is catching the exercise bug! And, yes, I also avoid the wheat and gluten stuff whenever possible - I am not in need of gluten free like some, but I do feel better and lose better without it!

The weight difference when I switched to the stability Brooks shoes this summer from my Asics threw me off too. I feel much slower in the clunky shoes, so ran my race yesterday in the old Asics with insoles. Hence also the purchase of new men's Asics -- switched back to what works. I'll still get my mileage out of the Brooks clunkers for short training runs, but can't 'race' in them I don't think.

I was really surprised to find out that cutting wheat out of my diet eliminated the nightly pain in my hips that would wake me up in the middle of the night, and leave me tossing and turning for the rest of the night. I don't miss that....so it is easy to continue on with wheat free eating. Glad to hear that you are finding it helping you and your family.
