Johanne's Journal, 11 August 2012

It's Saturday and a beautiful, much cooler day.

My ankle is finally, really healing. There's still an open area about 1" x 1/4", but it looks like healthy tissue. The area around it is peeling, like burn tissue, but not raw. I'm so glad. It's been exactly two weeks, yesterday. Within a few days, I expect I will be able to cover the area with a bandaid instead of a bandage.

I'm supposed to go food shopping with Lisa this evening. I've got my "proper" food list all made up. I'm going to get one of my soups in the crock pot to cook while I'm gone. That way, it will be waiting for me when I get home and I will have no excuse to eat anything I shouldn't. LOL!

Yesterday and today have been such gorgeous days. It got down into the low 60s at night and the high 80s during the day. We had 20+ days over 100F. My son sent an email asking me to please turn the thermostat up to 80F and buy a fan or two. The cooling bill for the last month was $289 and we live in an earth contact! (Basement, for those of you who don't know the term. LOL!) I'm sure we will have more hot spells before winter, but this week isn't supposed to be one of them. What a nice break!

I'm thankful for:

Waking up!
My knees feeling a little better.
My Velcro, who I closed in the bedroom so I could type this more easily. LOL!
My beautiful herbs and roses that have done so well this year, unlike my poor tomatoes.
Other peoples' darling babies, who I can hold and then send home.
A break in the heat.
Brown rice and oatmeal, without which, I would be lost!
My wonderful friends here on FS, without whom, I would be lost! LOL!!!

Glad you're starting to feel better, Johanne. Definitely make sure that oatmeal is gluten free. Not all oats are. Hope you had a good shop. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Gigi, Velcro is never a foot from me. His head is laying on my keyboard right now. I've coaxed him off my arms for the moment. LOL! Hope you're having a lovely Sunday.

Heather, I have a subscription for my oats from Amazon. They're Bob's Red Mill, Gluten Free, Whole Rolled Oats. I prefer them to the steel cut and, in this case, they have the same amount of fiber . . . 5 gr per cooked cup. They also taste amazing, much richer, nuttier flavor than Quaker. I hope everything is finally falling in place for you and sis.

Nice to hear from you Bonnie! I love hearing from you and glad the ankle is healing finally. Just remember, my love, gluten free doesn't necessarily mean healthy. Some things can be eliminated.... hee hee. I am talking about giving up those grains. Eek! I know... you just said you couldn't live without them. Think about it...okay? Hugs!!!!!

Bonnie, so glad you are getting better, I just missed your Gratitude challenge which I so wished I was able to join, but I should still say what I am grateful for every day anyway...if you start another one following this one I will join this time. The thing I miss the most being on the low carb is oats my all time favourite breakfast..even when I went off track I never ate them, I should have,(probably wouldn't have gained so much weight) but not looking back. Maybe I should try the Bob's red mill if they have such high fiber maybe lower carb. So good to see you girl....{{HUGS}}

Sandy, I have borderline kidney failure, therefore, I can't go high protein. The grains I eat, oats, brown rice, quinoa, millet, buckwheat, are all non-GMOs. I eat very little corn product and no glutens. My blood chemistry has changed so incredibly in the last 2 years. All of my numbers, lipids included, are in the normal ranged now, even my triglycerides, which were in the 500 range when I started eating correctly. I'm still slightly anemic, but MUCH better than I was. I haven't had to have a transfusion in a couple of years. For me, beans and brown rice are a necessity. I have to admit, I really miss eating lots of meat, especially steaks and hamburger. I indulge once in a blue moon, but not often. Besides the kidney issues, my budget won't handle it. LOL! Love you lady! Hugs back!!!

Cindy, I was getting soul-lost this spring and summer. I started the challenge because I needed it badly. I'm glad it rang a bell with so many of my buddies. I'm also happy to have you as a new one. You make me that much richer! Hugs, my friend.

Yvonne, I'm so glad to see you back. I seldom get on Facebook any more. I suppose oats on Atkins is a no-no. I'm not allowed to do Atkins, so I'm very thankful for my oats. I LOVE them. And, I love you! When the challenge runs out in the fall, I will see how many people would like to continue it. I plan to, informally, if not formally. You are welcome to follow along, even if you can't join since it's already started. It's good to see you too! Again, I'm so glad your (we're) back! Lots of hugs winging your way!!!
