Kenna Morton's Journal, 22 July 2018

Doing research and came across this article from 2013 — it’s a good article— especially for people just now hearing about Keto diets. Science has been working on this for quite some time. Spoiler alert—- Keto theories could very well be correct. Anyway good article and it is simple to read and offers Insite into what this controversy is all about. The article alludes to further study, I will see if I can dig up some results. I am not on a weight loss program so I don’t have a dog in this race either way.. and, by the way, Scientific American is a very well respected source. I went to Google and entered the name of the article: what makes you fat etc and scientific American sept 2013 and it came up ok.

A good read if you can find a copy - Dr. Atkins original book published in 1972 and his medical reports/published works from the 60's when he used his plan to treat patients with heart disease, diabetes, etc. His studies along with other medical professionals before him were very informative. Atkins referenced several studies about low carb diets including one from late 1700's. Well worth the read.

hi— I am old enough to remember the very beginning of the Atkins thing. Everybody back in the day was on it. But most people just burned out. It has come around a few more times in my years. It seems, like so many diets, that the weight can be lost but the lifestyle is difficult to maintain. Plus I think many people just don’t know enough about nutrition in general to see that the body gets all the micro nutrients that it needs to stay healthy. But things that can certainly be overcome but someone who is really committed. I will look for that book. Good old Amazon and used book stores. Thanks for your reply.

Taubes (the author of the posted article) wrote a couple of books on diets ("diet" in the sense of what people eat) with a lot of research references. One thing he said that stuck with me is that all diets end up restricting carbs either by restricting overall calories or cutting out junk and that is probably the real reason why they cause weight loss.

This is so interesting! Did they ever post results from the study?

Momma— I’m going to start searching for some follow up today. But I’m thinking that because the article is actually quite old that the proliferation of KETO in the last few years sort of tells that it is becoming accepted. I personally would not be able to do this long term. Still not convinced with how healthy it is from a long term point of view..

@Momma3224 -The research study had mixed results due to management strategies. It was very difficult to quantify the results because they tried to do the SAD/Keto comparison back-to-back within a two-month time frame. They continue to try to get a quantified study in place. They could use my results!

the macro's change as you get to maintenance level. But I agree the lifestyle is not for everyone.

I too remember when Atkins first became a "thing"... It was the antithesis of what I had always believed to be a healthy lifestyle, and I knew it was not for me...

Spoiler alert .... keto diets have not been scientifically evaluated so are equally likely to be debunked. That they are popular in some circles isn’t evidence that they are a good idea metabolically.
