April Rochester's Journal, 15 July 2018

I recently read some body-positivity information, which confused me about weight loss. Weight loss is something I still want. I achieved a bit today in fact, rather than gain weight, which was a pleasant surprise. I am slightly considering weight loss surgery because I could lose much more weight and get to my goal sooner than my 40th birthday. There are issues with both gastric bypass and sleeve surgeries of course. Also, my husband is against surgery, likely because his father has had so many, and of course surgery in itself is dangerous. This kind of surgery is laproscopic, so it is less invasive. Plus, if I have gastric bypass, the surgery is reversible, for better or worse. Then there's dumping syndrome with gastric bypass. With sleeve there's reflux, which I already have.

long term diet success comes from learning to eat in a way that promotes good health and good eating habits. That comes from making good choices and reducing calories and exercise. while a surgery will limit the amount you can eat, it will not teach you to make good choices.

I agree with Baskington. To learn to make good choices and develop good eating habits. Take it slow and steady, find a diet plan that becomes a way of eating. Good luck.

I don't agree with surgery. Eat healthy. Always in moderation. Exercise and just take one day at a time.

I wanted to get the surgery but I was not big enough. Fasting worked for me.

Do not do the surgery!!! I! Looked at your weight you can lose without such drastic measures!!! From your weight I bet you could start off at 1400-1500 calories a day and lose and then once you hit 200 then you probably need to do down to 1300 calories a day

You still have to change your eating habits with surgery, just change your eating habits, skip any elective surgeries, people die on the operating table all the time.

April, I also had considered surgery. I have a friend who did this and was extremely successful. But I did my homework and found that many with surgery have issues absorbing nutrients and most will often gain back some if not all their weight they lose. I didn't think you I'd ever be fat again if I did surgery, but come to find out, if you don't learn to eat correctly and discipline yourself to do this, the weight will come back on any way. So, now I would have risked all with surgery (including my health) and maybe still gained back all my weight. I am doing keto now, under a health coach at my doctor's office. The accountability and guidance is priceless and while things are slow (and I wish it was faster), I know this will become habit and transform my life and I won't gain this weight back. Good luck to you in your decision, no one path is right for everyone and we all need to find what works for each of us.

Just a tip if you suffer with reflux. This has helped many, and if you have surgery you will need to do this. NEVER eat and drink at the same time. Drink your liquids 30 minutes before or 30 minutes to an hour AFTER eating. Your stomach has to digest foods, and when you eat also make sure you chew/chew/chew your food. If it helps, count to 10-20 chews for each bite of food. Good luck, whatever choice you make. You are making progress. I would suggest to try BistroMD.com You eat real foods, maybe try for a week or two. It helped through rough times. Helped my husband too. Even if you have surgery, you will need to learn to eat the right amounts of food, and types of food.

I was you just about a year ago, I maxed out at 300lbs from the meds I was on to the diet I was told was healthy never working, I could not believe it, I switched to a ketogenic diet last september and just hit the 200lb mark, and still loosing weight, it really worked for me and there is loads of science and doctors backing it up. There are 2 versions of the diet one is for medical ketosis and the other for fat loss/nutritional ketosis. Google it love, it could help you too

One more comment. The reason I wanted the surgery was that nothing else was working for me. It was one thing for people to suggest things that I *should* do, but don't they realize that I tried those things? Basically they are saying to me, "You need to lose weight this way... but, if you are unable to do it, just be fat for the rest of your life" - - Find your own way. Good luck!

I know a lot of people in my real life that have had surgeries and look all weird from their body (they gain weight awkwardly, fat but an awkward strange kinda shape) cause they never faced their inner demons with food

Hey, peep by bio real quick. I’m a “had surgery, (1994)lost the weight, got sick, had it reversed (2014), gained 40lb back of the 120lb lost”. Here I am figuring out why I gained weight in the first place. Just now figuring it all out. It’s so much more mental than how many kcal we eat. It’s an entire mindset reset I’m going through. Dealing with all my issues and demons that lead to use food as my drug. Ok and wine lol. You’ve lost a tremendous amount already. Please keep going. There are no short cuts really. I’m not preaching against surgery but girlfriend you’re on your way already with your loss; on your own 👏🏻👍🎊

A very good friend had the sleeve surgery. She lost the weight, but also had to have a tummy tuck because of the rapid weight loss. She still has food issues and does not feel thin; even though she looks great. I believe it is best to take the weight off through diet and exercise. You must learn to know what foods work best with your system. As I have said before, you didn't gain your weight in a few days, weeks, or months. The same is true for the loss. Take the time to enjoy the small victories!🌷

I qualified for surgery but my insurance would not cover it. It’s taken a while but now that I’m losing and my goal doesn’t seem so un attainable anymore I’m thankful I did not have surgery. I watch my 600 lb like as motivation while I’m walking on a treadmill and what other people say is true. If you don’t make changes even surgery won’t work. Surgery is not a quick permanent fix. I have learned so much about nutrition over the last few years. And I figured out how to make it work for my body. You can too.

I weighed more than you when I started on Fat Secret - I lost weight with counting calories an exercise. YOU can do if I can do it!
