Steven Lloyd's Journal, 25 June 2018

Big calorie expenditure day yesterday...over 4250 calories or about two days of couch sitting for me.

Solo Century Ride (no drafting, always breaking my own wind 😓); 102.54 miles & 1940 ft climbed in 5:52 for a 17.5 mph avg. No wind in morning which was very nice as I climbed into the foothills, but mostly headwind and crosswind on the return leg, except for 4 miles in the middle and the final ten miles (that was nice - rolling along at 25 mph with little effort !!). Mostly zone 1 & 2 effort with a few short duration zone 3-4 on hills.

Biggest issues were sore feet at about 80 miles and sore nether region about the same distance, pins & needles!! Knees were a bit sore but very manageable.

Hydration was good - no cramping; only lost 3.6 pounds while consuming 3.5 litres (7.7 pounds) of water & electrolytes.

Next one I will do two stops and try and keep blood flow into "affected parts" better regulated.

Also just a FYI; if I plugged my 5:52 bike time into FS "Bicycling fast - 15mph" I would get 5532 calories burned...more than double what I logged using my heart rate monitor's value of 2568 calories for same period.

Yes, I noticed that the bicycling calculators on here are very inaccurate. I get my caloric expenditure from my power meter data.

Hey Glen, hands are ok...good bar tape and gloves, plus I do try and change position a bit on longer rides if they start going numb.

Hey B, this was a ride (100 miler) I've wanted to do for a while, into a small town in the Rocky Mtn Foothills then return, pretty quiet roads, nice scenery plus a beautiful day!

Hi Sallymax, Ches and Bluecoaster thanks but it really is just a matter of pacing, go slow and steady, keep the heart rate down, stay hydrated and have a refuel here and there. The discomfort for me comes from the constant movement and pressure on the bike contact points (seat and pedals). No issue for rides under two hours, longer than that and pressure point begin to affect the body and create a bit of pain.

Hi Whiteredline, yes they are as well as lots of other exercise estimates (which really are just average guesses). While not perfect, a heart rate monitor at least gauges both effort and time...

Wow! Well done Steven 👍

Jengefit...yes the last 15 miles my feet were killing me...even had my shoes totally opened up and still couldn't get comfortable. Jimmie, thanks mate, I see your cut is almost wrapped up too, getting close!!

YIKES! That sounds brutal but what an accomplishment!

Helen, other than the feet losing feeling and doing that brutal pins and needles feeling, it wasn't too bad. I didn't really plan for this either, it was such a nice day and just kinda happened...:-)

Much better overall feeling than the 60 mile ride a month ago.

Hi my little Greek friend, long time since you were here...hope things are going well and that you have a great July and rest of summer. FYI, little button turned two about a week ago and she got a new little sister two days ago, grandpa is very happy 😁👍
