mandypdavis's Journal, 09 February 2008

I've had a great week and I'm very please with the fact that I haven't cheated. However, we are having a party next weekend and we always have so much food! I need some suggestions for low GI party food recipes. People will be bring in foods that I have no control over. So if I prepare low GI foods maybe I can get through it without cheating. I plan to just have a glass of wine and nurse it all night rather than drinking anything else other than diet soda or water. I will have steamed shrimp for sure and probably a vegetable tray. But we will also have chips and salsa, cheese dip, sweets, meatballs, and all kinds of fatty foods and carbs here. So I have to plan accordingly. Any help, anyone?

mandy...i don't have any suggestions on recipes but i do wish you good luck next weekend. i know you have the strength to tell yourself, looking slimmer is so much more rewarding than these fattening food choices in front of me and I'm worth it. grab those veggies and the shrimp is a great idea too.

Thanks so much for your encouragement. Yes, and it is only for one night. I keep telling myself that it isn't going to last all weekend. Just one night.... Four or Five hours. I can do that!

I'm not sure if you're just going for finger foods, but I made an apple tart not long ago tha was very good (but requires plate and fork). The crust is ground almonds and whole wheat bread crumbs, filling is made with applesauce and it's topped with pretty apple slices. Also, you can never go wrong with hummmus and pita chips (a nice alternative to the cheese dip that always calls my name!). And a fruit tray! Oh, and keep your hands full as much as you can so you won't absentmindedly grab a sinful looking treat and pop in in your mouth while chatting! (I mean, if you are going to cheat, you really want to enjoy it!). You'll do great!

Oh party food! You're brave... It was torture for me over the holidays to watch my family stuffing their faces; but you don't have to starve yourself. If you're having snacks/ buffet - think about celery sticks/ carrot sticks with humous, and keep loads of unsalted nuts (almonds, raisins, walnuts, brazils, cashews, pecans, macademea) - there are plenty of different ones to keep a bit of variety, and at least you can munch on these whilst everyone else is having tortillas and salsa! If you're really feeling good - then you could always bake some carrot & bran muffins, or oatmeal flapjacks. There are some low GI cookbooks out there with lots of ideas like this, but you have to be careful not to add too much sugar! Best of luck...
