Refeeding After Water Fast

When I ate my first solid food in 5 days last night (3 pieces of a small pizza - no this is not recommended refeeding, I was experimenting to see what I could handle... and I really wanted pizza!) I had an incredible hunger for carbs. I wolfed down 20 crackers (70 calories per 5 crackers). Then a cup of frosted cheerios. I would have kept going but we didn't have much in the house and I didn't want to get dressed to go out for some ice cream (I wanted some soooo bad).

I then wake up this morning and I still lost 2 pounds (yay!). I walked 12k steps yesterday and only ate 700 calories so CICO (Calories In Calories Out) still applies (see: You Are Not Different: https://bit.ly/2I1NzSr). I noticed this happened last time I broke a water fast. I still lost weight the next day.

It was the DAY AFTER the NEXT DAY that I stated putting on the pounds (CICO + "For every one gram of carbohydrate stored in the body (as glycogen) there is approximately 2-3 grams of water retained" https://bit.ly/2jhVaOL).

People always say "Your body was in starvation mode and will now hold onto every pound". I think my body has had only fat to burn and will stop burning it if I give it enough carbs. It needs to retain the water with the carbs, so the pounds will come on really fast.

So today I plan to jog 5 miles and only eat once. However, I will allow myself to drink as many fat bomb coffees as I want. I don't expect any weight loss and maybe a little weight gain. I just need to get through the weekend until the fast starts again on Monday.

As to the fast, I honestly feel better on the fast. Once I start eating, I realize I treat food like a drug. A tool for pleasure. This is good for other people but clearly it doesn't work for me and I have to recognize that and not continue to try to act like other people.

Even if I ever reach my goal weight, it looks like fasting will need to stay a part of my life. I have not been 191 pounds in over 20 years. It feels fricking great! My body moves with me, I don't feel I have to "lug it around", and I am STILL 20 pounds overweight! I want to know what a 170 pound body feels like :)
191.0 lb Lost so far: 16.0 lb.    Still to go: 27.0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Good observations of self and information to ponder there. The idea of food being like a drug really does resonate with me. Perhaps there is a component of dopamine release behind things as well, especially the carb feed frenzy you describe (now that seen really is familiar to me). Outstanding efforts and force of will on your part, and though we follow different paths up the mountain you are an inspiration! Keep on rockin' it bruddah!

@JLente - Thanks for the continued support It really helps. As to willpower, it is my utter lack of willpower that makes me fast. At work we were in a 3:00pm meeting that had a basket of every carb I could ever want, peanut butter crackers, pretzels, Hershey kisses, ext. My co-workers dug it. I told them "nope, I'm fasting all week, no solid food until tonight". Now willpower would be required if I tried to eat one (or two) Hershey kisses. This would give me a carb hit, the hormones hit my brain, and I would EASILY eat 700 calories in that basket. When I eat, I eat to FEEL FULL, Period. This is like an alcoholic that drinks to get drunk.

Great post and you are doing awesome work. I definitely agree that you have to learn what your body needs to feel good and do that. I hated exercise for years and avoided it except for sporadic episodes of trying to lose weight and get my cholesterol down. Now I feel stiff and sluggish if I don't get my 10-13,000 steps or some other type of exercise. I don't like cleaning house either but it is easier to motivate myself now that I know moving the furniture to steam mop the floor burns a nice amount of calories. Keep up the good work.

@Gingerk65 - 13k steps is really good. It takes me at least 1 1/2 hours to get that many steps.
